And getting back to the McCulloch theme, Steve gave me some treasures this week including the genuine AC plugs for the 54 and 70+ cc 10 Series saws.

Mark,I got the goodie package today,thanks! I went to take the throttle lock apart & it didn't quite come apart the way the last one did.This one the top button came off instead of the bottom aluminum round piece.It didn't really matter,I put it on the other carb cover & ready to put on the 320 (almost).

I bought this 2-10 last month from a seller on Feebay who has tried to pull shenanigans with me in the past.Everyone thinks he's an "honest guy",but I beg to differ.There wasn't much to the saw to begin with,missing the entire right side - no clutch,starter,muffler,etc.The front handle had been "spliced" (I sure as hell would never use it).The piston &cyl.look decent,no scoring.I tore the saw apart yesterday & cleaned it somewhat.I went to put it away & just happened to notice that the keyway for the clutch is pretty well buggered.I've been told that a Woodruff key isn't necessary as long as the clutch is torqued appropriately.I tried to get a pic that'd show the imperfection on the crankshaft,but it doesn't really show up that well.The imperfection is on the right side.There should be a "wall" where the key rests against,that wall is pretty much gone.Other than replacing the crankshaft I don't think this engine is any good anymore.

The other thing I'm having problems with is the automatic oil pump.The piston was stuck & I had a helluva time getting it freed up.I finally got it out of the pump body & had to lightly sand with croakus cloth on the outer edge of the piston & on the inside edge of the pump body.It works freely now,but every now & then it'll get stuck in the down position & it still doesn't pump oil.I put a couple drops of oil on the intake side of the pump & worked the piston.Normally that oil will be pumped to the exit side of the pump.I took the bottom screw out of the pump body & found a small spring attached to the cover.According to an IPL there should be a small check valve ball in there,but nothing came out.I plan on running the pump through my ultrasonic cleaner to see if it'll free up the check valve.

That can be typical on a righty .I've got several crankshafts with split out key ways .What you might try is cleaning it up and heat up the clutch spider so it will expand then drive it on making somewhat of a heat shrink fit . Fact be known I've had them split on both sides ,clutch and flywheel side not on the same crank though .

Ed - I think you can get by using that crankshaft with a key and the keyed clutch. The RH start saws have RH threads on the clutch and without the key in there they will tend to loosen themselves in operation. Torque the clutch to specifications but don't over do it or you will split the clutch spider.

I thought of another method but it would take the machinery and knowledge to do it or know somebody who does .On the clutch side the location of the keyway would not matter .It might be possible to cut in a woodruff key pocket 180 opposite of the old one . I've done it on straight shafts on electric motors and such but never on a tapered shaft .On a Bridgeport type universal milling machine it shouldn't be real difficult to set it up however it would be time consuming . IMO that was the one fly in the ointment on those right hand start models .It is what it is .

How did I know that someone would suggest putting in a new (or used) crankshaft?Sorry,that's beyond my capability.I've goptten down to the bare crank last yr.only to have the needles get lost.That was the end of that project.

That or the whole saw for free ,they don't fetch much except for flea bay and the forums .Fact being first I'd have to figure how many I have(10-10's ) ,all freebies except for one that came in a packaged deal with a 250 plus a bow bar and 20 more pounds of stuff .The shipping cost more than the bid for the entire lot .Which is not to say they are a bad saw but McCulloch made a blue million of them and most saw shops won't even work on them .

As far as needles.I put them in a pill bottle so I don't misplace them .On reassembly put a little dab of grease on them which will blow off the first time you start it . Hang in there ,you'll get it .
