Just picked up an electric start mac 5-10E, I didn’t even know they existed.

Battery pack needs to be rebuilt, a couple of ways it could be done, still deciding.

Below video shows the saw cranking over, it will start, but that’s not what I was after here.

Does anyone have a picture of the charge regulator?



I have a diagram, looks like the only remaining and functional part of this reg is the start switch and blocking diode, as the scr, zeners, capacitor and choke are gone or blown.



Shouldn’t be too hard to rebuild, though I am thinking an easier safer option could be to disable charging from the motor/generator and use a modern smart charger and just charge before using.

For what it's worth, McCulloch engineers patented a rapid charging system in 1969 and were planning to go to market with all kinds of rechargeable devices including phonographs, radios, electric typewriters, flashlights, power tools, oscilloscopes, even electric starting chainsaws and outboards...

Instead, they ended up selling the patent to HP I believe. One report said they made more profit off the sale of that patent that all of the equipment the engineers had been working on up to that point something to that effect.

Interesting to hear about McCullochs plans for fast charging tech.

Nicad batteries are a Pain to charge relative to lead acid or lithium, i'll be considering a lithium install for this chainsaw.

This afternoons project. I tore the Super 250 down completely. Going to go through it and rering and re seal it.
I managed to break the crank stuffer trying to get it off, bummer. I will have to see if one of my parts saws has one here that will interchange.
I asked before, but does anyone know where I can get the proper gasket material to make the reed plate gaskets? These are extremely thick, much thicker than any of the Karropak material I have here.

How thick and how rigid? And what's 'proper'? The FelPro hybrid cork/rubber material comes in different thickness and is good stuff. Can be a challenge to cut the thicker variety to precise shapes without a steady (and patient) hand and a sharp X-Acto knife. The thinner stuff is much easier to deal with.

Or you could just double up on more conventional paper/light cardboard type material. A gently used 12-pak box comes to mind.

Just looked up that gasket. Couple on the bay right now. You'd need the thicker Fel-Pro or some fiber-type material for sure. Maybe some auto exhaust gasket material?

I used 1/16" karopack doubled up with loctite 518 on my 250. Has been holding well for 8 years now.

Gotfishon43 is an ebay seller that makes a lot of gaskets for McCulloch but I don't see any intake gaskets in his store right now.

Autozone sells a thick, gray, high-temperature gasket paper that I've made intake gaskets from as well that works pretty good.

Let me know if you end up needing a stuffer.

I've ordered 10 series Mac gaskets from gotfishon but he doesn't have anything listed for the large frame saws. I have found the necessary gaskets on ebay by part number. Just exploring other (less expensive) options first.

Dido Steve, they have it at Napa, and I use motoseal instead, but same basic idea, I only use motoseal because I didn’t buy stock in GameStop in time....

I try to buy precut gaskets, but it ls fun to make some every once in a while...

This is what I got at Napa, the thin karropak is about .020 and the thick is .055

This usually takes care of whatever roll your own needs I may have except for exhaust gaskets. The thicker stuff is what I talk about using for 10 series tank gaskets. I just cut a strip from the edge of the sheet to the correct length (along with a little MotoSeal) and no more leak. And you can get a helluva lot o' tank gaskets out of a sheet. Pays for itself with the first one.

I believe that I bought a roll of the hybrid stuff from Summit racing .

So I dragged this little outboard out and decided to see if it would run.
Looked it up to see who made it, and wouldnt you know it, its a Mac. Trying to find out what year. Serial# starts with 68. They were made between 1959 and 69 by Mcculloch.

I've always wanted one of these old 10-10's finally got one now McLuvin and with a sweet roller bar too! Thanks to Ambru. I'm gonna have to clean up and figure out the oiler though might be asking some questions once I have time off work to look into it.
