My 97 model doesn't have one.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G891A using Tapatalk
they only had the heat shield on saws that came with Cat muffler, and probleby only the first months or max the first year.
My 246 G Cat from 97 did not have the heat shield even it had cat muffler.

Good to see you back here, Tor!

Have you installed your 242 kit yet?
How's the performance?
hi Ted :)

If its the Tecomec kit, it's running on my logger friend saw, I've only seen it in action, but it sounded to be at least on level too a stock 242.
We had to use head gasket since the squish was all to tight to run gasket less, if my memory is correct Tecomec had some good timings numbers also.

If I remember correct, didnt you also purchase one Tecomec kit Ted?

Yes, I did ..... and it's getting on a saw very soon ... like before the end of Sept.
the only negative I can say about the Tecomec kit was the weight of the jug Ted. There was a tad port casting, other then that the ports was beautiful shaped.
If Tecomec had made the pistons today I would bought them, I more prefer it compared to the last version from Mahle.

Today is the day when we gone go through PTO bearings.
I used to have a few, but not anymore..

slacker 543301 is their original name, Husky #501 59 40 02.
There was used one SKF bearing with Husky # 501 59 40 01, i'll see if I can get the number.
Stihl used a slacker bearing in their 020 AV Super, slacker 524453, or SKF 394764AA

I spoked with slacker Norway today, none of those bearings are in production anymore, what we find today is the amount who is left, no new bearing will arrive.
Both Husky and Stihl has quit offering those bearings also.

slacker 543301
slacker 543301 E23
slacker Z-543301

Stihl 020 AV Super:
slacker 524453
slacker Z-525453
SKF 394764AA (Stihl 020 AV Super)

Also:
slacker 525453 Z27B

I'll see if I can dig up more information for us

This is the bearing they started it up with, 133SG PTO bearing from 1980 SKF BBB 242803:

Tor, do you have any update on this?

I did find the slacker 543301 ..... at $103 US each!

The ring that the flywheel-side seal is in .... is that all it does?

seems extremely pricey if you ask me Ted.

543301 is a special bearing in 2 ways, its 2mm wider compared against 6201, but the ball center has been moved as well, those two gave the space for a quality seal

I'll see what I can dig up about the slacker 543301 bearing Ted, for awhile ago I was in toutch with a company who could get the 543301, I think the price was around 40-50$ each + shipping, but I got busy with other project in the meanwhile. Maybe it's time for me to order one bearing and check if it's the real thing ;) if it's the real thing I'll give you all links and contact info.

Cranks... they used 4 different cranks.
Picture show crank 503 53 67 02 to the left and crank 503 53 67 04 to the right, 12 mm vs 13 mm conrod bearing (when we study the cut in the con rod pin to the axel it's easy to see that the 04 has bigger conrod bearing)
_DSC4144.jpg

503 53 67 01
12 mm conrod bearing
42, s/n 0450748 ie year 90 week 45
242 SE, s/n 0130392, ie year 90 week 13
242 SG, s/n 0130001, ie year 90 week 13

503 53 67 02
12 mm conrod bearing
42, s/n 4110291, ie year 94 week 11
242 XP, s/n 4130001, ie year 94 week 13
242 XPG, s/n 4110001, ie year 94 week 11

503 53 67 03
13 mm conrod bearing
This crank was solely used as substitute crank for the 01 crank.

503 53 67 04
13 mm conrod bearing
This crank took over after the 02 crank, and it should only be used in crankcases after those s/n's:
42, s/n 0450748, ie year 90 week 45
242 SE, s/n 0130392, ie year 90 week 13
242 SG, s/n 0130001, ie year 90 week 13

A 246 crank is far as I know crank 503 53 67 04 since 246 arrived after 1994 week 13 far as I know about.

Just thought I might share a possible lead on a very good alternative piston for the 242. It is sold by Lil Red Barn and they state the manufacturer of the piston kit is Performance Saw Supply and not Chinese in origin. I bought one and did some comparative measuring between it and my bad OEM piston and found it to be identical in dimensions except a very small difference in pin to crown heights. I'm talking just a few thousandths. The only other difference is the intake skirt is not offset like OEM. Anyhow, I have not run this piston yet but my 242 build will be commencing in the very near future. The Pistons quality looks to be very good, is windowed and is almost identical dimensionally speaking. I have a thread over on the "chainsaw" forum about it called "My first 2xx and what a way to start". In that thread I posted measurements of this piston along side my OEM.

Here is a link to the piston: https://www.ebay.com/i/181505707342?chn=ps&dispctrl=1&ul_ref=http%3A%2F%2Frover.ebay.com%2Frover%2F1%2F711-117182-37290-0%2F2%3Fmpre%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fwww.ebay.com%252Fi%252F181505707342%253Fchn%253Dps%2526dispctrl%253D1%26itemid%3D181505707342%26targetid%3D375022164479%26device%3Dm%26adtype%3Dpla%26googleloc%3D9005185%26poi%3D%26campaignid%3D962373765%26adgroupid%3D46238024325%26rlsatarget%3Dpla-375022164479%26abcId%3D1129816%26merchantid%3D6304964%26gclid%3DCjwKCAiAo9_QBRACEiwASknDwUHrILrCzIl9Z6ICWpjhdWDIPNslBr9yZIbdrlqGsBTUmPLo7HSCURoCDxgQAvD_BwE%26srcrot%3D711-117182-37290-0%26rvr_id%3D1373738300023

@Tor R I got a NLA here on the seals for a 242/246 are they available there? Would you be interested in shipped some? PM me the details
they are still available in US but tricky to find.
There was a 242 build for just a few weeks ago here, maybe his sources of deals still got them on stock.
If not, I'll get you some when I order something again, I'm empty of them also

A missing IPL from Husqvarna, knew it existed but they refused :D
242 - 1.1992.jpg
I'll fix a copy for your guys this weekend.
This IPL is interesting in many ways since it got 3 shoe clutch, xp top end, and those cool starter decals (this is my xpg year 91 and it match this IPL perfect)
_DSC3047.jpg

This is probleby the only saw I would like to get myself:
42 japan.png
I got 42's year 88, 90, 3x92, but I've never seen this start cover decal.
To make it more interesting........

I'm working with it now Ted, did send one request to a company who claim they got them. Plan to buy 3 PTO bearings, if they are the real thing I'll post up the contact information to the company. Their stock is 30+
