I'll never understand what makes people run benol in a chainsaw.

Not used in a saw, why would you want to fumigate yourself.
However, back in the day, I would add an ounce or two into a tank of a snowmobile (on top of oil injection) when I had the opportunity to be the leader. Now that was some fun leaving the smoke screen. And folks at the trail warmer shacks always asked what kind of race gas I was using...

It goes alot faster if you put some dead bodies on your resume.
There is an anecdote where an elderly father, who could no longer mow the garden, wrote a letter to his son who was in prison. After some time, the son replied telling him not to dig anything in the garden because there was hidden corpse. The next day the feds came, dug everything thoroughly and found nothing 😉

I contacted Motul directly and asked them what 2-stroke oil of theirs do they recommend for the Stihl 500 and they responded back with the Motul 710 2T with a 50:1 ratio...

Their reply below...

"Being that the engine is 2-stroke, aside from the chain oil, there is no oil in the crankcase of the engine. We do recommend our Motul 710 2T: MOTUL 710 2T - Motul at a mixture of 50:1 as listed in the owner’s manual.

Motul 710 2T Formulation built on synthetic bases with very high combustion properties which minimize smoke and deposits. Instantaneous and stable mixing with gasoline."

Stihl, Makita and Motul recommend a 50:1 ratio. Why do many members on the forums recommend a 32:1 or 40:1 ratio?

The lower ratio, for bottom end more importantly the bearings and such , ur saw will thank you later, Husqvarna’s site even suggested using 33:1 ratio for saws 75cc and up ,

Outside of the US, richer mixes are recommended. 50:1 is recommended here for emissions.

I also read that Castor based oils are not recommended in colder weather. Castor and castor oil blends often separate in temperatures below 35°F.

Is Amsoil Dominator, Honda HP2 and Maxima K2 ester based?

Because the oem’s are bound by the epa and that’s all they CAN recommend. Many here have seen the carnage left behind with bearings going bad prematurely. On top of that, small 2 strokes continue to make more power down to about 24:1 due to added ring seal.

Another reason is that most new saws today use strato technology and are about 30% more efficient due to it. That 30% more efficiency equates to 30% less oil running through the lower end to lubricate the bearings. 50:1 in a strato saw is very similar to running 70:1 in a traditional 2 stroke. Another way to look at that is 50:1 in a traditional two stroke (as far as how much oil the bearings see) is very similar to running 32:1 in a strato.
The 50:1 craze got started 40 years ago largely because richer ratios were fouling plugs and creating carbon that would build up. There are many new oils out today though with enough detergent in them that they don’t build carbon at all and have proven to actually burn cleaner yet at heavier ratios because of the detergent. If you use a good oil that does not promote carbon, (Motul 710 is perfect), there are no drawbacks to running extra oil.

I also read that ester based oils are not recommended in colder weather, they are summer time hot weather oils. Ester oils do not mix well with fuel in colder weather when outside/ambient temperature is below 50-60*F (10-15*C). Motul 710 2T is ester based. So, I would assume it's best to avoid Motul in colder weather...

I haven’t heard specifically of 710 having an issue in the wintertime. I know there are members here who use it exclusively year round without issue. I have been into several saws using it and they appear perfect inside
