Did you ever see inbred jed on YouTube. Apparently he looked up felling a pine and something that was hung up dropped and hit him in the face. Dead immediately. He was an experienced guy. A local acquaintance was walking the woods by me and a limb can down and broke his neck. It’s dangerous out there.

Tangles like that can be tough to read. I always take a few minutes to look them over and try to figure out all the different forces involved before I make the first cut, but even then I still guess wrong sometimes. Glad you're okay!

I know better and if I would have took a minute I would have seen it. My wife went somewhere and my dogs wanted to do inside so I took advantage of the free time without taking the time I needed. Years ago three Norway spruces went down together and I about killed myself in front of my wife. I hiked about a mile in to clear a trail and forget stuff in my truck. I got pissed off and in a rush. My cut went through and sprung back into my chest and threw me. I’m pretty sure I was inches from a broken neck. That was the end of being a trail volunteer. Watching what I was doing left of the cut should have went up and right maybe move down. Left went straight at me.

to see if limbs are falling is the main reason you look up when felling a tree.

I've had the top of a dead tree break off and come down on me like a spear. If I hadn't looked up, it would have hit me on the head.

Very large/tall trees can move quite a bit up top before visible movement is seen at the cut. I prefer to watch the cut, but it is good if you are cutting with someone to have him watch the top.

Years ago I was dropping a 40" tree and my buddy started yelling it's going. Nothing I saw at the cut was happening. A slight breeze was moving the top. We got the hell out of there fast. That was a big tree.

Be careful, get your wedges (doubled and tripled) in early, practice your escape, etc? I don't deal with those big trees anymore. PITA to move around. I'm pretty sure I now have sciatica due to these >100lb log pieces.

they are for very small stick that fall from trees, but they do nothing for limbs bigger than your two or three fingers together that is a few feel long falling from 20 feet or more.

you look up every few seconds to make sure you are in control of your own safety. the first thing you do when cutting any tree is plan your escape route at a 45 degree angle away from the direction that you plan to fell the tree. clear your escape so you dont have to fumble around in case you have to run... its much safer to have a spotter but that isnt practicle in production logging. so cutters work in pairs they work both cutting in the same area if they dont hear each others saws they know to check on the other. because *s-worde happens and it happens fast.

I'm 56 and i have to go til im 67 to get the full pention at my job because i didnt hire here until 45. i have worked for the company since 03 but the first ten years were as a independant contractor so that time doesnt count. i have had a job since i was 10 years old too.....im ready to just retire

I understand. My full retirement age is 67. I'll be 62 in March. I think I will start social security then and work part time. My body is getting in bad shape. I don't think I can make it til 67. It's all I can do to work 40 hours a week now.

i dont know how im going to make here til 67 either. my current job is 8-12 hours five days a week. sunday i was here for 13 hours. makes for long weeks. nothing here is maintained so everything i hard to use and is wearing my body out way faster than it should. just gotta do one day at a time.
