@stretch5881 The porch shades the house fairly well and there are trees just out of the pictures view on the side of the house that start to shade the house after 2ish in the afternoon. We built a SIP home to take some of the extremes out but even at that it rarely gets above 90F here (central MN) but often gets below -20F so keeping heat out isn’t a major concern.

Mama Bear has this “master plan” for what she wants around the house and I get to drive my big kid sandbox toys either way so I just roll with it lol.

Got it. I didn't see the shade trees.
What is SIP? I'm a little out of the loop. My education came from New Shelter magazines in the early 80's.
Of course. What Mama Bear wants, Mama Bear gets.

Structural Insulated Panels. The walls are constructed of 3/4” plywood outside, 1/2” plywood inside and 8” of foam in between. No wood of any kind other than window openings goes from inside to outside walls. This house is three times the size of our last house plus has a large attached garage and it uses less energy than the old house. I’ll see if I can find some construction pictures to post sometime. It’s a pretty neat system !!

Yup. Learnt long ago that it was a lot easier in the long run to adopt that approach and go with it.

I'm totally sold on SIP's for a number of reasons. Keeps cool in the summer, much warmer in the winter and a lot more sound deadening of outside influences.

Our SIP's build is full wall upstairs and the basement walkout wall, with the basement walls on sides that have dirt contacting done in ICF's 13.5" (including foam). We used Enercept for the SIPs and went with their 10" wall option. It was mentioned that they can do any thickness up to a roof thickness for any panel placed in any position.

Loaded up some dirt into my little red wagon.
View attachment 425204

Three loads in the front of the house filled in this hole quite nicely. I’m going to top it off with some gravel and make more parking/something space.
View attachment 425205

4 more loads dumped beside the house to start the patio project Mama Bear has been after me to start on for 2yrs now. I guess it was time lol

Replaced passenger side rear outer door handle on the wife's honda odyssey. Broke it last October. My wife says I procrastinates, clearly I don't as it hasn't even been a year yet. In my defense, it is her car and she never reminded me. I saw it one day and ordered one from Honda. Changed it the same week it came in. Lol

Gotcha. So there are no framing members to bridge extreme temps.
I'll have to do a little online research to learn more about this system. Not that I'll use it. I've worked on this house for 36 years. I'm too old to get my moneys worth out of a new energy efficient project.
Glad to see younger one's thinking ahead.

The porch is on 4x4 posts. But the cabin is on 6x6 posts driven several feet in to the ground. Its pretty solid. I built it just high enough off the ground to get my flatbed trailer under it. If/when she moves out I'll probably sell it.

Yeppers. I burned/charred it. No stain just a clear coat sealer.
I used to watch some of the Alaskan shows years ago such as the Alaska State Troopers. I would see a lot of the homes built up off the ground several feet and wondered why. I just assumed it was in the far north and had something to do with the permafrost but I was just guessing. It just seems like the wind would whip under them and the floor would bone bone-chilling cold. Obviously it is done for a reason so I am just wondering

I am screwy and notice weird things in pictures. Did you get that swingset from a school or a park? I wanted one similar to that for my kids when they were young but the damn school was being a PIA. They were replacing the original ones from 1961. I played on them as a kid and my oldest did a bit before they torched them up instead of selling them. Hell when I first started teaching I took my FFA chapter out on a service project to repair the old vintage playground equipment in the park. I was using an old Lincoln Pipeliner to weld a piece of flat iron on a merry-go round type thing when the kid holding it let go and it smacked me in the mouth breaking my two front teeth ( course my helmet was up at the time) I am sure after all the work we put into it the city scrapped it also.

Is that pig charred, on purpose?
It was cooked in a smoker grill, similar to mine. Uses indirect heat to cook at a low temperature. Last one the guy did was 105-120 C for 5-6 hours. Smoke causes the discoloration.

I built it from an old grain auger !!

Took quite a bit more time than I thought it should have 😂

The littles tested it before I brought it out of the shop.

They even convinced me to build monkey bars. They literally use this every time they’re outside. Time well spent !!

You need some good welding gloves. I have a 60cm x 60cm x 60 cm box full of them and welding coats. I would send you some but the air ride is not cheap.
Hawthorn thorns go through double layered thick leather gloves, they don't give a damn about Your PPE!
The thorns puncture regular rubber shoe soles, I utilize puncture proof work boots.

Best protection against Hawthorn is:
- don't plant it
- burn it on the spot

Ah, gotcha!

We skipped doing the roof panel option as it was expensive and we didn’t want vaulted ceilings upstairs anyway. If I remember correctly we there is 30” of pink blown in stuff in the attic.

I didn’t know about the 10” option when we ordered or if have totally done that. Insinuation is cheap when your house is heated with sweat, chainsaw gas and diesel 😂

No actual framing. This is our forever home and we spend some $$$ on the bones of it so it’s be as maintenance free as possible.

We did a blow-in instead of the roof panels as well. Don't remember how deep, but R64 was target.

This gear has a million parts 😉 I limited myself to 3 bearings because the wheel was difficult to turn or the cones were too tight. Spectro S7 Sachs / I was surprised by the inch thread on the axle of a German bike
