Whitethorn is the Hydra of plants!
Cut off its top and it will create half a dozen new branches, then repeat!
You end up with "crowns" so big You have to cut them out with a chainsaw.

One thing is for certain, NO ONE will dare try crawl through a Whitethorn hedge!

Is that a species of ceanothus? Buckthorn family?

We have whitethorn here in CA. Makes gnarly long spikes similar to locust. Tend to cause infection when they break off in the skin and set for a while.

That crap would stall and it is too heavy and noisy.
Wall socket powered is KING!!!
Besides, it even says S(hi)tihl on the sticker! 😜

Whitethorn = Hawthorn

Short spikes, but pointier/sharper than a medical needle!!!
Those thorns go through double layered thick leather gloves same as thin rubber gloves - using rubber gloves at least the thorn pulls out while it breaks off in the leather gloves!

I am dead tired, bucked up two storm damaged trees, trying to get the "worthy" stuff home before I collapse! 😵‍💫
Using the wheelbarrow, should have used the tractor - seemed as overkill at the time, but now I regret not going that route.
I may be experiencing sunstroke symptoms....

White/Hawthorn (metric, divide by 2.54 to get Inches)

Honey Locust (metric)

I touch that Honey Locust nearly every time I pass it mowing, rarely do the thorns puncture my skin.
The White/Hawthorn I can't touch with two fingers without getting punctured!

One type of "mountain whitethorn", often it has 1-4" thorns, but every so often you hit a patch that is mostly thornless.

There is also "chaparral whitethorn"

Out of the ceanothus around here, I prefer the "blue blossom."

I am so done for today and tomorrow!

Changed clothes and enjoying the fresh evening breeze.
Enjoy! Well-deserved time off is the best.

We're piddling in the garden and hoping to continue moving/unpacking some of our belongings.

you will lose weight 😉
I'll fix that tomorrow by not doing anything, watching movies and eating Norway & Swiss chocolates! 😜

On a serious note, I could do with a little weight loss. ;)
Then again, my "reserves" are what keep me going on days like this one - I can typically go a whole day without food as long as I substitute with nutritious fluids.

Property line with Whitethorn hedge
IMG_20230730_191223.jpg

A big "crown" within the hedge at about chest height, I will have to cut it out so that I can trim the hedge lower.

A crown I cut out a couple days ago, that is my hand.
