Paint on an aluminum radiator might also be an attempt to conceal the fact that it is aluminum. It doesn't seem that long ago that aluminum radiators were considered an inferior product. My 93 Landcruiser had a plastic tank with copper/brass tubes. When the plastic top blew off I replaced it with an OEM radiator. Replacement looked identical but it felt like it weighed a third of the original. IDK, but I would bet Toyota had switched to aluminum tubes.

Seems black on the radiator would absorb heat? Makes 0 sense to me

So the unpainted bar is dissipating more heat than a painted one?
No. There's only so much heat. It just dissipates faster. If you actually took the saw and cut wood for an hour, (I know, a fantasy), I bet if you checked the bar temps 10 minutes later, the painted bar would be a lot warmer than the unpainted one.

And now I'm going to AS and argue with Spidey about bias ply tires, another subject which matters to no one.

It was stated earlier that these "scientific" tests were done with an open mind and in the interest of finding out what's fastest and best.

Why is it that when the flaws of the testing and results are pointed out that those are dismissed and the initial, flawed, results are held up as gospel?

The theory is the paint on the outside draws more heat from the inside (greater rate of transfer than bare metal) then the cooler outside air pulls the heat from the paint. The paint being hotter than the air it wouldn't absord any heat from the air - kind of like a one way valve.

Likely the cost benefit of paint has changed in today's manufacturing environment.

Threads like this are the reason I don't log into AS anymore.
Im curious? What exactly have you not liked about the discussion here? Its a debate to figure out the rights and wrongs of the discussion and test to help Redbull and to be learn from? I hadnt seen it as bad as u say it is?

Maybe the better way to test the finish on/off of the bar would be just shoot the cylinder in the exact same place for both test to see if the cylinder temp changes?

So suppose an unpainted bar is 20° cooler, what does it really mean? What is gained or lost?
Well Chris Ill say it like this. I talk with Julian outside this thread and most of his test r for the last ounce of performance he can squeeze out of these saws and he is looking for every small angle he can find for racing purposes. I understand what he is trying to accomplish whether he is right or wrong in the way he is doin his test, all that matters to him is will it increase cut speeds. Will it? I dont have a clue but thats the process of elimination he is workin through. Will it matter to the average firewood cutter or tree trimmer? No. But if 60° is the ACUAL temp. Increase/decrease it could make the bar/chain last longer and have less stretch for us?
