Mike if you pay shipping I'll send my splitter to you. If not a puller grabbing onto a piece of steel bolts to the bar studs will pop it out. I use a heat gun to warm the pocket area. That's to get the old bearings out if they stay in the case.

Thanks for the offer, but Al already volunteered to send me a splitter if I need one, but I think I can get it.

Hey, I rebuilt a 351 Cleveland to run like a 351 Boss, and never had to use heat for anything! Did not know there was something called a heat gun!

Do the pins get driven out before the split, or not? (I believe there are two?)

OK Randy, I give you the "You Suck" back, I got what I paid for this time!

I may also just call a few local dealers to see if they got any 460s (or 046s) with toasted top ends. I now have 2 sets of good P&Cs (one ported).

Well folks, I've decided to PUNT! I have someone clamoring for fire wood, and a local shop offered to do the bearings & seals for a reasonable price, so I will deliver the wood, and use it to pay for the installation of the bearings & seals.

Tax season is just coming up too quickly for me to be learning this now. This way, I definitely get to install that 046-D jug before tax season!

My total cost for the saw is still very reasonable.

drive out the pins first for sure
use a pin punch of the proper size so the taper doesn't get caught in the crankcase and waller out the magnesium hole
I got a set at harbor freight that are perfect for real cheap

Dave,
when I have split w/0 "splitters" I leave the pins in for last. The driving out of the pins with the punch was all it took to bust open the cases( and a little bolt loosener). Don't know if there is a right way or a wrong way but that worked for me. I assume its better to keep the cases aligned with the pins if you're using a "splitter".

Alignment of the cases doesn't matter when using a splitter in this instance. Once those two dowels are driven into one case half or the other (no need to completely remove them if' ya don't want to. Because the splitting force is not really centered on the case, and the rear dowel is sure to release first, the drag from the forward dowel pin can create enough twisting force to crack the case of you don't pay attention to it coming apart.

my first 046 crankcase, I bought the OEM splitter and didn't know about the pins, busted both halves getting it apart, pins are assembly alignment pins to help pull it together straight, I'm not saying you "cant" get it apart with the pins in but the $200.00 splitter was the cheap part of that first learning experience for me and I try to remember the lessons that money takes the time to teach me even if I don't like the lessons :)

That's ok DAVE, we all ruin expensive *s-word from time to time. I poked a hole in a 460 case by using too long of a screw for the oil pump once. Actually didn't kill the case totally as I JB'd the small puncture wound, bought a bunch of aftermarket parts I was curious about and put it together making two 460s out of a nearly botched build. Saw is still running today, roughly 3-4 years later.
