Remember - the 462 isn’t a 46, it’s a 44. Really should have been called the 442. Naming goof aside, I love my 462R, and would pick it over any of the true 46 saws listed.

500i replaces ms461. For some stupid reason, the marketing idiots at Stihl decided the 46 badge had more name recognition, so they killed the 44 and did a switcharoo.

Now, of the real 46 saws, if I had a choice, and intended to use the saw rather than just admire it on a shelf, the 461 is a bit more refined, and feels like it has more grunt and a broader power band while also running more efficiently, IME.

460 and 461 are so similar overall, performance would probably be a toss up after a proper porting.

046, MS460. MS461, MS462 and have it ported by a reputable porter, which one would it be?

Why?

Because if it weighs more than the 261 it had better be worth the extra heft with a longer bar.

462 is too fragiliy.

You can still get a MS461R which is an improvement over the 460.

That's not quite what I meant..........
Looks like the 461 is discontinued, so the only choice is a 462.

I checked the specs and the 460/461 was 76cc at 6.0 hp
The 462 is 70cc but they clain it makes 6.o hp

I don’t have a say in a ported saw, but I’ve had brief run time on my grandpas 046 and I own a 461 and used to run a 462. Those saws are/were all stock and I’d take a 462. It seemed faster than my 461 and 046 and was lighter than those two saws as well. The 461 and 046 are close, but I’d take the 461 because it feels like it has a bit more grunt than the 046.

I put a little time on one: they move around like a spring saw rather an an AV saw & I just don’t care for them.

When you sit them next to a 261 or 362 it becomes clear they are closer to those saws & aren’t primary felling saws which is what I consider a 70cc class saw to be.

My 261 runs a 20” .325” bar.

1-461 wears a 28” or 32”: The other wears a 32” or 36”.

He asked about stickered saws & that is what I have experience with.

just wondering was all, I haven't felt those problems on my early 2018 462 with a lots of hours of logging on it, but I mainly run 20-25" bars and occasionally 28-30" bars if I'm stuck, 461 was a great saw imho but I like my 462 better

To me the 462 is a short bar saw & it sounds like that is your primary use for one: I’m glad you like it.

I was talking to a local dealer today and asked him if he had a 461 in stock, he said "no" but ssid he had a 462.
I said I ws looking for a 461 because that's what I really wanted and he told me the 462 is a better saw.
Of course, I asked him why its a better saw. He said it is lighter (I agree) and it has more power than the 461 and the 460.
Hhhhhhmmmmmmm, not sure if he knows what he's talking about?
