Would be between an 046 and 461, depending on what I wanted to do with the saw.

I was talking to a local dealer today and asked him if he had a 461 in stock, he said "no" but ssid he had a 462.
I said I ws looking for a 461 because that's what I really wanted and he told me the 462 is a better saw.
Of course, I asked him why its a better saw. He said it is lighter (I agree) and it has more power than the 461 and the 460.
Hhhhhhmmmmmmm, not sure if he knows what he's talking about?

The dealer knows which one he can sell you TODAY, of course the best saw when you have a fish on the hook is the one right in front of him :)
So far lots of honest opinions in this thread.

462 does have more peak horsepower, but you can’t lean on them as much as a 461

This.

@toolmaker,

What length bar you planning to run & how do you like your saws? That will determine which to go with.

Short bar saw-462, peaky
Longer bar saw-461, torque.

I've flattened out some of the 462s peakiness by adding compression, and shortening the blowdown. I'm sorta stuck at a 23 - 25% gain in cut speed though.

That seems reasonable.
If the carb is a bottle neck you might be all in and all done.

Give it and the 500i another 2mm of stroke and they'd be totally different saws.

I agree. Stihl is making their stroke shorter, and Husqvarna is going longer. It's all about packaging, but it's not conductive to grunt.

Would be different if they had a little more rotating mass

For comparison, how much improvement do you see with a 461?

Well I've only had one 461R and its been one of the best saws I've run for the size, it didn't stay stock for long because if there's more to be had I always go find it. I deleted the base gasket and followed Randy's thread as far as I dared with drilling the carb main jet, a 460 coil, and advancing the timing, then taking the sharp lip off the bottom of the intake port.. it runs great now with 32" bar...but to hear Randy say there's so much more torque to be had compared to the 462 makes me glad I went with a 461 when I just ordered my second 461, this one from Randy.
