Here's how you can mount a 372 wrap
To a 268/272View attachment 298470
This bottom fastener is in the correct location you just have to add the second hole.
And not use the other 2 locations
View attachment 298471
You just have to bend the down tube to fit the recess
Both fasteners line up with the existing holes
I relieved the bottom corner to make it easier to fit.View attachment 298472

The brake flag is too tight
I'll try some different versions.

Here's how I mounted a 372 wrap
There's other ways
I did it the easy way.

@High octane
I got tired of looking for wraps for my 266/268/272 saws
And guy's wanted 1-150.00 for them.
So I just modify these 30.00 oem 372 wraps
IMG_20210904_142947 (1).jpg
I've been cutting with them for months
No issue's
And plenty of clearance to get to the bar nuts.
And I prefer the large diameter wrap to the tiny original one's.

I was looking at all the stupid pulley variants for the recoil types, and I decided I would document the different types that share the same p/n. Pulley #1 (far left) is off of my brother's 281 has a cup height of .450". The second pulley is .740". The third has a cup height of .950". All of them have the exact same p/n, the only difference was the arrow pointing to a number. On the short one (only one groove in the cup) the arrow pointed to 1, on the medium one (3 grooves in the cup) it pointed to 3, on the tall one (5 grooves in the cup) it pointed to 5.

I made one Jred work by adding washers under the dogs.

I may have discovered part of the mystery. Some starters sandwich on top of the air deflector and some sit down around it. Or rather some deflectors extend out under the starters and some are notched out for it.

I wanna run a low top/filter on a ported 272. Like 266/61 cover, 266/268/288 filter. I think the filter should flow enough air if it's for the 288 as well...but I wonder if the high top 272 cover and flat filter box wasn't made for a good reason...?

Thanks

Is the Chinese white plastic guard washer gonna self clearance or melt?

Who put the screw behind the handle?! I think the handle is bent…I wouldn’t mind having some husky handles for my Jreds…and or I’m gonna do some bending.FB5579FD-C8A5-4EF8-81EC-FEE3EE6A791D.jpeg

I'm finally joining the red side! I've decided for 28 inch bars I'd rather have a pair of 272's instead of a pair of 372's. She needs rings, maybe a piston and some seals, a top cover and some bigger dogs, but I finally have an elusive full-wrapped J-red 2-series! There may be a chance I'll have to cut her loose, but I'm thinking it's a keeper.

I imagine that’ll clean up pretty good.

Nice job @Woodslasher , but yes these pulleys can drive you nuts. A look into the dusty archives I have can fill in some of the blanks. Lot of the confusion is because the electronic info available to everyone in incomplete.

The short explanation is that there are 4 Husky pulleys and 2 Jonsered pulleys. .

The first pulley is the small post/small ID pulley that came out on the 162SE, white top 61 and the early Jonsereds. The part number is 501 520 701. This pulley was used longer on the Jonnys than the Huskys. Jonsered use this pulley until 1990, so pretty much all of the twin coil Jonnys will have this pulley.

Husky went to a larger ID pulley for the 266/brown top 61's; part number is 503 102 402. The next change for Husky was due to the change to the deeper air injection starter that used the larger decal, this is where the long shank "5 ring" pulley was introduced and is commonly called the 272 pulley, and was also used on later 268's. Part number is 503 102 405. This causes some confusion on the 268's as the early XP's with the small decal starter retained the 266 pulley. The missing link in here is the 3 ring pulley that was a short lived deal I think due to a flywheel change. Not sure on the dates, but may have some documentation somewhere. Part number is 503 102 403 and it is NLA.

Similar story for the newer Jonnys; 625, 630 and 670 Super II and the 670 Champ. Pretty much all the single coil saws, starting in early 1990. Part number is 503 432 101 and it is also NLA.

But as you can see, for the most part, the pulley doesn't have to match the saw, it has to match the starter housing. Complete starter assemblies can be swapped between saws. Possible that some pulleys can be modified to fit in different housings, but I've never tried anything there.

The 281/288 uses a different pulley, and it didn't change when they went to the large decal starter.

I would respectfully like to differ on the 181/early 281's not sharing pulleys with their smaller counterparts: According to Jackssmallengines, pulley #503102402 is used on the Husqvarna 61, 266, 281 and 288.

The problem here, as usual, is "according to Jacks". It's really not a good idea to rely on 3rd party websites like Jack's or Parts Tree. They are chock full of errors and are what I was referring to about incomplete information contributing to the confusion. Especially when we are going back this far to try and sort things out. So.....

My statement is correct regarding the 281 and 288. Original part number was 503 102 401 that supersedes to the current 503 484 801, not the 503 102 402.

I looked back into the 181, and you are correct in that the early 181's used the same small post (10mm) pulley as the 162 and white top 61. The change to the larger 14mm post starter housing was made to the 181 starting in week 10 of 1985, as noted in service bulletin X 85.1021-96. This starter update took place before the 181 became the 281.

Keep in mind that I'm arguing with Jack, not you. :beer-toast1:

Bolt right on?
Nope
But all fasteners line up with existing holes
The down tube has to be bent towards the saw and ground or smashed thinner to clear the clutch cover
And the back bottom edge needs trimmed off to fit into the tank
Recess but the fasteners
Line up perfectly.
The 372 wraps are less work.

@mrxlh
The 576 wraps are easiest to mount
All the fastener holes line up
But the 372 wraps work just fine.
But I don't have the metal flags meant for fullwraps
So I use the plastic brake flag versions.

Thanks Czed. I ordered a 372 kit yesterday, I’ll order a 576 and report back on the metal flag clearance and such.
