I still lurk but other hobbies have consumed my time, mainly our local snowmobile club. Maintaining and grooming 50 miles of trail with an aging skeleton crew is a tall task, but you do get to run saws! I've been running saws since I was 12, but I've been riding since I was 6 and was hanging on the back when I was 4.

I believe this saw is allowed in this thread. Picked it up pretty cheap. It's a 266 G, but with the XPG starter decal and XP top cover. It also has a metal tank, which might make this al early model? I got a bit confused when reading 266 threads. Carb is a Tillotson S224.

It is very dirty, and the clutch cover is damaged and the brake lever is bent. The piston and cylinder are like new surprisingly.
Sadly the wiring from the ignition system is totally gone. Will have to dive into that later.

It's a 1988 saw so it's actually a later model 266. And the top cover, starter, and brake/clutch cover are all correct for the year. The metal tank was standard on heated handle saws of that frame well into the 1990s.

Awesome! Thanks for the information. I thought metal tanks were the early ones, but you are right.
Is it common that the isolation from the wiring is totally gone?

The jonsereds boys always claim their versions are more powerful
I never could tell a difference
I just have a lifetime supply of 2 series.

I let this guy in the steel toed Crocs run a 266 of mine he wanted to buy itView attachment 346186
He kept getting pinched and finished off my rubber mounts
I'm going to try johnmms 288 spring mount cut down trick on it.
The rubber avs really don't bother me I'm immune to them after 30 years of running them.
I got this guy a 257 it suits him better
It was entertaining watching him step in several fresh cowpies in his Crocs.

I'm curious what this 288 spring mount trick entails?

My 266 has a spur sprocket, they seem to be hard to find. Am I right that I can use the (I think) newer style clutch drum with the removable sprocket?

I'm going to be diving back into the two series. Have a 625 jerd, 266xp and a 272k that I need to go through and get going. And while looking for a cylinder for the 272k I found a stash of two series parts I had forgotten about. So I might try and build a 268 or 272 from parts while I have everything dug out.

Should fit in well with my ugly 272

That 272 is probably the saw I always bring just in case. It has been stone cold reliable every time.

I found an issue on my new 272 build after testing it this weekend. The tillotson hs224 throttle shaft bore is wallered out bad. I somehow missed it when rebuilding the carb and get this…. replacing the throttle plate as well. Whatever.

I found a great deal on a NIB Tillotson HS260a. Can I swap over my external idle screw style throttle shaft from the 224a over to this 260a so I don’t have to cut the top cover?

I’m confused, the 268/272 top cover is set up for the 254,260 idle screw. The 266 top cover is set up for the 163/224 idle screw. I purchased a new 260A and it wouldn’t work without cutting the 266 top cover, it was a direct fit for my 268 that had a fretted 254A.

Are you sure it is the bore that is wore out? Many times it is the shaft itself that is worn out as they are just soft plated brass. They will wallow around inside the shaft bore making it seem like the bore is wore out when it is not. Possibly you may just need to replace the shaft.

@mrxlh - This is on an older 61 chassis that uses the case idle screw vs. the newer ones that use the carb idle screw.

@CJ Brown - I suspected that as well, but the shaft is perfect. Maybe the shaft plating on some years is harder than the carb body.
