Anyone here ever built a Ford 460?

I just bought one and going to pick up next week. Thinking after I check it over, I will probably start looking at the exhaust as apparently post 1970's head flow poorly on the exhaust side.

I think we may have found the "intermittent spark" issue on a buddy's car. And that, boys and girls, is why you do not put a windowed non-MSD cap and rotor setup on an MSD distributor. I think once the new cap, rotor, and pickup are installed it will be a lot happier.

Did 429's, never a 460.

I have no idea on the heads. I'm very familiar with GM and Chrysler. Never worked on any old Fords other than a straight six.

I'm looking forward to working on this engine as I like to gain efficiency. Sounds like the exhaust is the first place to start, so I'm looking at replacing the stock exhaust manifolds with headers (I've read that Banks is best, but it looks like they no longer make them).

Any ideas are appreciated

Don't take anything I'm about to say for bible. My post is just to stimulate thought. The 460 I owned only taught me one lesson. NEVER pass a gas station!

Yes, the 429 and 460 are the same family. In the fuel injection years the 429 was used in the medium duty trucks while the 460 was used in the pick-ups. No idea why you had the bigger displacement in the smaller trucks? Maybe the 429 could be beat on harder? I do know that the cam bearings were a weak point in the 460 and they have an aftermarket updated design to help with longevity.

A custom grind can get you a good bit of efficiency. I had a cam ground for my 300 just a bit bigger than stock and it really woke it up without killing gas mileage.

My stock cam was:

.396/.396 192/192@.050/ 268/268 advertised 110° LSA with an intake centerline at 114°

The custom cam is:

.448/.448 204/204@.050 280/280 advertised 112° LSA with an intake centerline at 112°

You would never know it has a cam upgrade unless you drove it and felt it before and after. The increased LSA keeps vacuum high to keep the fuel injection happy.

The 429 is the same family, just pre emission. Higher compression ratio, better flowing heads and cam timing.
Rebuild still got new pistons, cam, timing set and the heads get hardened seats installed.
Fuel mileage didn't seem to vary much whether you had a 300 six, a 460 or anything in between, unless the gearing was stupid from the factory. That did happen every now and then. Power on the other hand varied greatly.

I had a F-150 300 with 3 speed + overdrive and 2.73 gears AND a Bronco 351 HO 3 speed auto with 3.50 gears. WTF! Neither one got mpg's. The 300 would lose speed in od at 65 mph. It would drop the rpm to 1350 at 65 mph.
I swapped axles and the od was like a car 4 speed. Both got wayyy better mpg's.
