Yeah theres something funny with the control lever. It does not feel very positive when you push it down into choked.

I'm curious as to a quick and dirty fix, since I probably won't strip and tidy this one for quite a while (have other projects in pipeline), but I still may use this for doing firewood this winter.

I may PM you a couple of close up piccies in the future of the actual setup and see if you can point out the right things to adjust/bend etc.
The lever or the metal spring can be problematic on this series. Usually a new contact spring helps... especially if the saw can't be killed immediately.

Few other items I usually do w 1125s (aside from typical fixes)
- remove cylinder cover and put a small touch of never seeze on the cylinder stud and the captured nut. These can lock up with rust.
- chain catchers are cheap from Huztl, usually they're shot but yours looks good
- inspect oil line
- check case screws on well-worn 1125s. We've found a few loose ones closest to muffler area which may cause case gasket failure and an oil leak.
If the carb has limiters, cut em for a better tune

Based on the short vid your clutch seems ok. While checking your oiler inspect clutch and springs. 036s typically had 1128 clutches w proper washer. 034s had 1125 clutches w smaller springs and built-in spacer without the large clutch washer. However, these parts interchange between all 1125s and, as mentioned above, there were a ton of updates in various runs since 1980something.

Thanks very much @BuckthornBonnie I liked all those posts. Some really helpful stuff.

My plans for that saw is to try a quick fix for the lever issue, and then just run it in the winter. I probably strip it down and bring up to new next year....but it has to wait it's turn for now, behind my 044/460 project which is next :) :)

I never took a pic of mine but I do have the same pipe, I did wonder if mine had been played with.

Yeh I found mine didn't want to be swiched off once, I think it was sawdust bridging the gap. So I just pushed the decomp switch/button, that stopped it...

On a 024 I once had the wire had pulled out of the contact slightly. I had to strip the wire and heated the contact end to re soder it. It took me a while to figure that one out.

Yep. Or choke... but usually one can push around the master control til you find the right contact point. I blow out that area frequently, too.
I posted once about the engineering of these saws being some of the best. I'd add the switch to the oil line and throttle linkage as "weak points."
Still, easy as heck to work on and build up.

So muffs and pipes aside, another of @Heffalump 's interests - performance.

I just looked at the numbers for HP for the 036, and the ms361. Both identical at peak power, i.e. 4.6 bhp. But the cubic capacity of the 036 is a tad more, and revs characteristics seem quite different, according to my manual max revs for 036 is 13k, and for the 361 is 14k. Clearly they are both very different engines?

I was also wondering about the potential for very slight mods i.e. to bring the squish tolerance in to ~0.02" and perhaps very slight exhaust and inlet port "treatment". In that case do you think that it would ok to let the 036 rev somewhat higher (13.5-14) as long as it's running a decent mix and rich enough?

I'd say so. Some are tached to 13500 bone stock and 4-stroke nicely.

Too late. ;)

The 036/361, as I understand it, responds very well to a muffler mod. @Chainsaw Jim did some port work on Mrs. Heffalump's 034S, but he specifically left the squish alone at my/her request. She sometimes struggles pulling it over and we didn't want to increase compression any more.

I hope to get some saw time this weekend for pics and vids. If I do, I'll tach it again.
