Well it's close to stock. :D

Muffler mod and base cut .010 to get .020 squish. Ports haven't been touched
So... In theory you closed the combustion chamber, tripled the quench area, upped swept compression and volume, lowered case compression time but increased intake time witch will increase case volume and pressure @ high RPM's. If you only be-burred the transfer roofs or did you? Did it have a D shaped intake floor? Did you shave the key, do tell. What carby

Tillotson carb

Stock timing

Didn't touch trans in any way

Regular shaped intake, not the teardrop like an 036

A lot of that occurred, just in a very small amount

There is a pic that @Chainsaw Jim put up in a porting thread that shows the top 034S exhaust port as almost flat across. That was factory. It can scream, man.

Mrs. Heffalump's saw runs a Zama. Jim tweaked the carb a bit, added another port to the muffler and cleaned it up inside. The result is a little scary. But the wife loves it!

Can any of you guys advise on this point?

So the 036 came the other day. And seeing as it had a nice bar and chain, and most of mine have been rocked (and rescued) once or twice in their lifetime, I decided to swap over the 036s 18" carlton bar (and its stihl? chain) over to the ms341 before completing that sale with my neighbour.

But to my dismay I discovered that no matter how loose I tensioned the chain, I discovered that whenever I torqued up the bar nuts I found that the chain would not freely run in bar no more.

Basically once the nuts were tight the plastic guide, (the part number 11 in the below pic) was nipping the chain tight.

I quickly checked and found this chain was still a 3/8" (0.063") regular chain like my others.....but it turned out the carlton bar is only 4.5mm thick, and my stihl bar (which the ms341 usually wears) is 5mm. And so with this thinner bar in place the clutch cover (which is genuine stihl part for the model) squeezes things up to tight.

Have other people on this forum encountered this issue? Whats the fix? I did wonder if adding an extra side plate (i.e. part number 9) may alleviate this problem.

Well, I just got my verier calipers out for you and , an Oregon bar and a new stihl bar come in at 4.85 & 4.9mm.
I'm guessing you got chit behind number 11 which is pushing it out to proud.
Pop it off and have a good clean behind it and also in the hole so it sits flush

Edit IMHO saw dust is the culprit some where...

If it doesn't have a side plate but does have the tiny side plate screw hole, I'd recommend putting one in. Some 1125s didn't use the plate, tho. If you end up with the plate, make sure there's no junk behind it and that it fits nicely. If it's too proud, your bar will fight you and you may rip off the bottom tang of the plate.

I use Farmertec btw... very nice with only the occasional small hole for the chain adjuster.

My 034 didn't have the plate or even the screw hole. I got a plate from Dall that I run. It oils better with the plate

Thanks for the replies about the chain stuck issue. But I'm convinced that the issue is the 0.5mm difference between wearing a sthil bar @ 5mm and the carlton one @ 4.5mm. That difference means the cover is pulled in tighter, and hence the placcy guide squeezes up to the chain that much tighter. It's all pretty clean re. saw dust etc..

Anyway, I fitted an existing 18" stihl bar (which it used to wear very happily) to the ms341 before selling it on to the neighbour. I guess if he ever passes it back over the fence for me to sharpen the chain, I'll take another look. The side cover (and hence the placcy guide) were brand new a couple years back, so perhaps I could have rammed that further in to cover's recess, or perhaps I'll just trim a couple of shavings off the guide.

Not to worry, just wondered if any had seen this before......have a good day fellas :)

I thought I'd take a video of my 036 today, I beleave the wood is greenheart ? It came fro the beach where it had been used to stablilsed the beach for loads of years, I got hold of a few of them, and they have been used on my allotment for the last 5years,
If I've linked the youtube file correctly then you should be able to see it ?
