The Farm/Rancher's are the Rodney Dangerfield of the saw world. No respect, easy for folks to compare apples to oranges. Likewise the saws of yesterday, Homelites, McCulloch's, Poulan's, etc. get little love, even if they still cut good. I like messin' around with them. Guess I've just have yet to meet a power saw that I didn't like. I will admit after running a 562xp for the first time last summer, I can see how it would be easy to forget.

I think a 365/372 is one good saw, imo not much heavier than a 562xp, 046 power with 044 weight and even more ported or modded, 4 screws, the handlebar off and the top end is off carb muffler and all. Easy and cheap to get parts, and you can go to hardware store for screws instead of going to dealer like you have to for a stihl (not trying to knock stihl). Even if you have an xtorq and it blows up or someone straight gasses it you can convert to oe style top ends. Just my opinion if your a tree guy you want a saw you can get parts for easily, whether it's a 372 or something else, as things will break eventually.

The 036 is arguably better in all ways (but price) but I'd argue that the 029-039 (Dad bought a new 039 when I was around 12) have put a lot more firewood on the rack for a lot of people than the 036. Likewise the 55 Husky I bought circa 2000 killed a lot of Hedge and other trees before it met an untimely demise. Now, there's a reason why many of us (DAD and I included) now have Pro saws across the board, but the underloved mid-class saws are probably bought 2-1 or better over the high end models.
I have no doubt that a 029/290 has cut more wood than any other and there's probably been more of them sold than any other saw, there a pretty good saw really but not as good as a 034/036.

If I had them I could sell a 290 every day, your average firewood cutter will have a hard time wearing one out.

I agree. We put Dad's 039 through hell sideways and it had "character" but ran very well from day one through the day it was burned to the ground with the rest of the inventory. After I found AS, (pre AS-holes), I MM'ed it and defeated the limiters and it found another gear. Then I went to my first GTG in Arkansas and realized just how much else was out there (though I had always been fascinated by the old mag saws) while meeting many people who would become my friends. Within 20 minutes of getting there I met Les (Logging22) and ran his ported 084 for the first time... Been ruined ever since. Now, today would I buy a MS291-391 over ANY of the pro 50-65cc saws (to include the Husky/J-red triple nickel, Echo 590-620, or Efco saws)? NO. Because I've now seen, used and understand why the price difference is there.

Would I be screwed though if I only had Dad's old 039 and my Husky 55 still? Not at all. I simply appreciate better equipment and learned from Dad to buy the best tool I could afford and to take care of it.

I would think about rehabbing a decent condition 039 for sentimental reasons and as a saw to hand to the lesser experienced "volunteers" though.

Good evening! I work for a logging company and the saw I use currently for cutting brush, topping, felling small trees and all around work is a muffler modded 036. Now this saw is in good condition and was very lightly used before we obtained it. The owner and I are friends and we have been discussing either having the saw ported or trading it/selling it for another saw within the 60cc relm.

Any thoughts gentlemen?

I have a ported 036 and a ported 70cc saw. Power difference between the two are significant. I recommend a ported 70cc saw. You'll forget about the extra weight once hear and feel the power of the larger saw.

Looking forward to trying the 562 myself. I have a lathe, something I can help you with?

Thanks Fred. Nothing in particular, but I enjoy fabricating things, and I'd like to machine my own cylinders when working on saws.
Essentially a good tool to have in the shop.
