You do know that you have to oil, clean,re-oil a K&N just like the Uni right?

Yep, but its a nice spray pack. I have used K&N for the last 18 years in my cars

I guess I didnt investigate what the UNI filter's use now..... all I remember is having to pour goop into the foam and squeeze it back out with my hands which was really messy, wasteful and juts a PITA.

Tell they use a spray pack now :)

Spray em and squeeze em. It is a little messy but I don't mind

Mmmm, I like both designs. They have both stood the test of time and proven to work well.

Its a Husky / Stihl thing I think.

I use Stihl because I have always used them and I know them well.
Same with the air filters.

Both are good, get the job done!

I've used K&N on my truck, good filters. I do like em, just haven't used one on a saw yet. I would try em though

I would use the UNI filter as is no problems
I would not use the K&N on a chainsaw without the outer skin cover.
The other kind of background reason I chose the K&N is that I hope to see most of the dust get caught on the other cover and fall off compared to it being sucked under the stock saw cover and being trapped to stick to the stock filter.

I am thinking of making some sort of cover to protect the carb, but it will have to stay with the rat rod theme

If I was to get a new muffler, what would people recommend?

Is there a "go to" aftermarket unit of should I look for a a good OEM unit on evilbay?
I predict a new OEM muffler will cost me more than a P&C kit here in Aus

I kind of like the idea of a base with no baffle, and a sealed front, with 2 big vents pointing to the sides to direct the exhaust fumes away.

With the current OEM dual port front I find a lot of the exhaust gas tends to hover around the cut. Its a saw that is used in big long cuts so exhaust gas dispersal is important.
I dont want to breath any more than i need to, that's for sure

pretty much all the AM 066/660 mufflers are the same and decent
I like the NWP Taiwan 066 muffler best and it sells best for me on Ebay even though it is the most expensive.
Both the Farmertec and NWP 066 versions are empty inside the can with the standard oem style dual port design and great fitment.
NWP also sells a clone of the MS660 muffler complete with internal baffles, they are nice, but again they have baffles :)
I seem to recall that Mike (glock37) preferred the Raisman (which i dont offer) over the Farmertec for ease in prep for high temp black powdercoating for a restoration project, maybe he will chime in on that.

As far as deflecting exhaust from the user, having a custom muffler made with the dual tubular pipe stubs made by one of the kick ass builders on this site would allow you to tailor where it ends up to a greater degree.
I would think a slightly longer pair of pipes angled forward and off the ignition side would work best except perhaps on felling and stumping cuts when it would be pointed more towards your head.

I gave all of my hd2 filters away, I'm not a fan.

Wow I am surprised to hear anyone say this, least of all a real builder.
I sent a guy four different filter options with a recent 660 funsaw build and he later asked me to send him an HD2 instead.
My current favorite is the NWP three piece that has the foam insert and the fabric/felt band in addition to the regular body, it sells pretty slow compared to the cheaper Farmertec HD option.
Everyone should remember to remove the rubber seal on the filter base when using an HD option with the rubber seal on the bottom edge, the two rubber surfaces wont seal against each other.

Good thread here fellers.

If I run a 066 a lot......I leave the filter cover off. The outer wear covers help too.

If you don't have a intellacarb after very little use it will not longer run. They just stop up,it may filter air better but a day in the log woods on my 066 or 064 will stop it up to where it won't run.

That helps a huge amount. It won't stop up as bad and the saw will run better.

The filter media is removed so the foam is the filter. I like it.
