395 is fun with a 24" to.
They just don't have the nasty sound and feel of a 394.

I beg to differ. My 395 sounds pretty nasty

It matters how much compression it has. Lots of compression, and timing advance without a decomp button usually ends up with a stained arm and the dreaded monkey fist from having the rope pulled out of your hand.

I use a "D" handle from a snow thrower on my non decomp OEM 288XP-W.

It may sound silly but I prefer an Elastostart to the hard D handle.
