Since Alan told me about tweaking the side of the piston to match the intake and strato duration, I've been doing that. I think he was right......it does help some.
You are just smoothing out the pathern and match the piston ports to the jug Randy?
Any pictures so a dumb norwegian can understand? :D

I leave the pattern alone. I just change the height of the opening point. Next time I do one, I'll get some pics.

that would be awesome.
I went to another forum today and digged up one old thread you had, back on the good old 13, your timings was:
Stock:

Squish: .034
Ex: 105°
Tr: 116.5°
Stratos: 71°
In: 73°

Ported:

Squish: .020
Ex: 105°
Tr: 116°
Stratos: 75°
In: 78.5°

If you did one stock 550, just to improve it a tad, would you change IN and stratos timings.?

What changed the strato and intake timing was machine work. Deleting the base gasket lowers the cylinder about .025".

So what I did there was cut the squish about .030", then a little off the base to set the squish clearance at .020". Then I raised the exhaust and transfers back up to about the stock numbers. That gave me more compression, a tighter squish, and more duration on the intake & strato ports.

Now I would grind a little on the piston to make the stratos have 78.5° like the intake.

A dirty bench top but a sparkly clean 084 [emoji12]

Ran the other 084 today ran ok for a few minutes before something happened with the carby and started flooding itself.
Can see the fuel flowing down the front.

Finally I got the time to almost finish one old project, 2013 model straight gas scored.
Few hour saw I think, @Landmark helped me with a new c&p from Bob, put things together tonight and it is a starter.

Left to clean a few mufflers after MM (I may try to fix the bulky one a bit or use another muffler) and cut the top covers for those 545/550's.

Looks good Tor. Let me know how it compares to your 545

Finally got that 046/w/440 tank handle running today, boy did that saw have issues!

Figured it was a carb/fuel issue, so that is where I started. Emptied & flushed the fuel tank, a few times! Pulled the carb and the snorkel was filled with saw dust. Cleaned it all out and put the carb back together, the float seemed to be adjusted just fine. But the carb would not hold pressure.

The guy gave me a new AM carb with the saw, said he had put it on but the saw still did not start. Sure enough, I put the AM carb on and go to start the saw. Too much compression, and immediately gas comes out the muffler.

Pull the plug (wet), pull the muffler and discover the gasket is only attached through one hole and is partly blocking the exhaust, (and the guy told me when the saw runs it is very strong!) Also noticed the end cap on the plug was missing, so it could not have been making good contact.

After pulling the muff adjusted the piston to BDC so I could rotate the saw 180 and pour the gas that was in the crank case out (I think it may have been Deets who told me that trick a while ago, so thanks to Deets or whoever it was). It sure came in handy knowing how to do it today.

Let the saw sit for about an hour w/o a plug and with the piston all the way down, then put her back together and she started on the first pull on high idle and ran great!

Compared to running it with a partially blocked exhaust and a messed up plug, it now has an hd-2 air filter (instead of the completely filthy HD one), a dp muff cover, new plug and fuel filter, and a chain catch.

If this guy thought the saw ran good the way he had it, he should just love it now!

I had a family event this afternoon, so I will try to reach him tomorrow.

Still waiting on clutch parts from the Stihl dealer for that 201T. They did not come in on Fri, as had been anticipated.
