Finally got that 046/w/440 tank handle running today, boy did that saw have issues!
Figured it was a carb/fuel issue, so that is where I started. Emptied & flushed the fuel tank, a few times! Pulled the carb and the snorkel was filled with saw dust. Cleaned it all out and put the carb back together, the float seemed to be adjusted just fine. But the carb would not hold pressure.
The guy gave me a new AM carb with the saw, said he had put it on but the saw still did not start. Sure enough, I put the AM carb on and go to start the saw. Too much compression, and immediately gas comes out the muffler.
Pull the plug (wet), pull the muffler and discover the gasket is only attached through one hole and is partly blocking the exhaust, (and the guy told me when the saw runs it is very strong!) Also noticed the end cap on the plug was missing, so it could not have been making good contact.
After pulling the muff adjusted the piston to BDC so I could rotate the saw 180 and pour the gas that was in the crank case out (I think it may have been Deets who told me that trick a while ago, so thanks to Deets or whoever it was). It sure came in handy knowing how to do it today.
Let the saw sit for about an hour w/o a plug and with the piston all the way down, then put her back together and she started on the first pull on high idle and ran great!
Compared to running it with a partially blocked exhaust and a messed up plug, it now has an hd-2 air filter (instead of the completely filthy HD one), a dp muff cover, new plug and fuel filter, and a chain catch.
If this guy thought the saw ran good the way he had it, he should just love it now!
I had a family event this afternoon, so I will try to reach him tomorrow.
Still waiting on clutch parts from the Stihl dealer for that 201T. They did not come in on Fri, as had been anticipated.
