Something new, and something old on my bench today.
The new ... it is a first year 046 with a 440 tank holder. The owner tells me it was rebuilt several years ago by a local Stihl dealer, so I don't know if it still has a first year jug on it. But he does say the saw has always been strong, and he used to cut 5 cord a day with it!
Says if the saw starts right away it runs fine, but if it does not start it floods very badly and won't start, he has been pulling the plug, letting it air out, and exchanging plugs to get it to fire up again. He says gas comes pouring out the muffler.
I'm thinking maybe a stuck float valve? Any thoughts out there?
The second one is my own 034 (soon to be a 036). It did not pass a vac test, and upon further inspection the clutch side bearing has a good deal of movement. Guess I'm gonna finally learn how to split a case and install bearings. Any advice on doing this stuff is appreciated!
Bought a new tool today, an impact wrench, guess I should have got one a long time ago. Got the DeWalt cordless 18V one with 300 ft lbs (they make 3 different 1/2 18V ones, all diff power). It got a double workout today ... removed the lugs on my trailer tire (had a flat), and removed the clutch from the 034. Wow does it make these things so much easier than they used to be! I guess this old timer is breaking in to the modern world!
I always like to tease my Nephew and the other mechanics he works with about how they "cheat" now adays, with drop lights that don't break or burn you, and nifty tools that make things easy to do that we used to struggle using channel locks and vice grips to do. The world does keep spinning!
