That's one nice piece of maple. What kind of maple was it any idea? Most of the big ones by me are silvers.

It was a big leaf Oregon maple.

Actually not real bad. The 20" wide spruce slabs are pretty light when dry. It might way 75-80lbs just clumsy to handle so takes two people.

Couple more things I made. Spruce slab bookcase and a red elm table. Top on table got a little warped because I screwed up by sealing one side and not the other right away. Side that wasn't sealed absorbed some humidity and grew warping my nice flat top. But finished it anyway because it was to nice a chunk not to.

Two coats of watco teak oil with two part epoxy coating.

This is from a table I made rough sawn. I knocked the fibers down with a brush sander followed by 120 grit sand paper. Couple coats of oil/poly blend and then I rub it down with steel wool until its smooth to the touch. Then a couple more coats.
This table leg is actually very smooth to the touch despite the rough sawn appearance.
