Thanks mike. There's a product called Epifanes marine varnish. It's for yachts and boats but it's great for outdoor woodworking. I would follow the same procedure substituting Epifanes for the oil/poly blend.

Have you ever finished anything rough cut, and what would you use on that?
No I haven't but the light sanding then finish with light sanding between coats makes perfect sense. For outdoor stuff I use rustolium or varithane water base spar varnish. I like the low odor, only thing I don't like is that it raises the grain more than oil based on the first coat. Watco, rustolium and varathane are all made by rpm so I figured I'd have the least chance of compatibility problems.

This is from a table I made rough sawn. I knocked the fibers down with a brush sander followed by 120 grit sand paper. Couple coats of oil/poly blend and then I rub it down with steel wool until its smooth to the touch. Then a couple more coats.
This table leg is actually very smooth to the touch despite the rough sawn appearance.

Very nice and I've learned something new for my brothers oustside benches.

Wow, I should have done that with the Chestnut Oak I cut a few years back, was a nice size double.

Used my middle mill and a ladder to cut the whole piece 2-1/2" thick. Cut it last spring and with the exposed endgrain it was dry in a few weeks. This one is 24"x32" at widest points

Couple more slabs out of the same chunk farther up. These were fresh sawn photographs. All of them have developed a split or two do to radial shrinking. Pretty much unavoidable and you need to just fill splits in. These two are around 24"x48"

Nice. I am surprised the tree didn't split.

Was enough give on the line where the bark was to keep it from breaking is my guess. The spots where it's solid have splits like the table I made. I'll just do different things with them. Maybe add black dye to the epoxy on next one so the crack is black or I'll pour epoxy in bottom then fill with small rocks or something and then epoxy over them. See when i get to it
