Funny you say that, the tires on my Farmall are firestone
I’m a farmer I use tractors. Firestone’s are absolute king. There’s plenty of different compacts in the case line red case not white ones. That would suit the needs you’re looking for. More compact than say a 656. You’d end up with a peice that you could do more with

If you do decide to go new I’d very very seriously consider avoiding hydrostatic. If you must go hydrostatic try to find one you don’t have to keep your foot on the pedal all the time.
Massy has a gear driven one with shuttle shift for forward reverse I like it quite a bit.

Check this out. Half my budget, 50hp, diesel, Nice loader, utility sized, heavy enough that I don’t think 2wd would be a problem and it already has chains. I might jump on this.

That's a pretty nice looking rig. A 45 HP hydro tractor would work circles around it, but for the money that looks like a lot of tractor. I do like 3 cylinder diesels, and for skidding logs it'd probably work great. Plus, it leaves room in the budget for a skidding winch (buy a skidding winch Josh, you can thank me later). Any ideas what parts support is like for these British Internationals?

Case ih will have them. Just for fun. Why would you think a smaller hydro tractor would work circles around it?

I was referring to parts. Case ih always can get parts. I have no experience with this particular model but that’s what’s good about buyin red/green equipment. Parts are typically close

I’ve been looking at their inventory but have yet to actually go to their dealerships.

Yup hydro is king of speed, but this tractor could lift a kubota B-series off the ground with the 3-point. My grampa had the gas version of this tractor years ago and it was a great machine. Parts appear to be readily available online.

I’ll let ya’ll know how it works out, fingers crossed it’s still available.

I will definitely be looking close. I’ll bring my brother in law too, he’s been rebuilding and/or flipping international tractors for 15 years. And he’s a 20+ year diesel tech, always nice to have a ringer in your pocket.

Good to know on the parts availability. I've been tempted by a couple of old IHs myself.

I just mean that for using a bush hog, a tiller, or a bucket, grapple or forks, a tractor like my MX4700 with a hydro transmission will be so fast and easy to operate. They're much more nimble and not having to use a clutch to reverse or change directions really adds up over the course of a day.

Now, obviously old iron ABSOLUTELY has its place, and that one Josh posted looks great. I'd love to own one like it. For hitching up to a heavy disc or a plow, heck yeah, something like that or a big old JD would be the choice over a hydro every time. These modern day large CUTs are a great compromise machine; they can do a reasonably good job at being a farm tractor, working in the woods, and also doing jobs that are better suited for a skid steer. But, will they last 50+ years like a Deere 4020 or similar machine? Probably not.

I’m a hydro hater is probably why I’m so biased toward them. And also stubborn. I’ve used both Both have thier place. If I was gonna get something for all purpose let’s call it yard tractor I’d prefer gear drive. For major loading like 10 hours a day I’d go gear drive with shuttle shift.

Couldn’t Agree with you more on the speed of hydro and after talking to you today I felt that's what I needed. After talking to all of you guys in here it has really made me think about what I NEED vs what I want. Hydro would be great in a newer tractor but at a much higher cost when in reality, for me, what I actually need is a decent loader for 2 big projects but the rest of the time its going to serve as a log skidder and an occasional snow mover. And the older iron would fill all of these needs easily. I’m only explaining this to illustrate my thought process in all this as I have pretty well departed from the “must have 4x4” mentality. I have derailed my own thread...LOL!

But honestly, all of this discussion has brought me down from the somewhat impractical goal of finding a 30+hp modern compact tractor for 12k. I have to live within my means, and while I can afford more than $6500; why spend more if I don’t have to? Wish me luck fellers! I hope to be bringing that 454 home if it’s still available and isn’t a turd. It better run perfect for that money...

I grew up running a farmall A so shifting gears ain’t no stranger to me. By any chance do you hate hydro because of the early IH hydro’s of he 70’s??? Man did they suck

No I hate hydro because of the newer John Deere hydro on the compacts. I drove a Massey Ferguson with the straight shift and a shuttle. The shuttle eats that johns tail.
Both good little tractors. I don’t like the old ih hydro either
Even with foot pedals you work your foot to death loading less than just pushing a clutch in
If you’re loading dirt from a pile they are cumbersome
