Is he sawing long?

This is an ash of mine from yesterday, your son's stump is better. I came up a little high on my back cut.

He's cut a few hundred trees over the last two years, mostly cedar around 12" but more recently I've started him on bigger stuff.
In my experience, it's mostly about slowing down and being precise..... I've made quite a few bad stumps in my time..... a very high percentage of them have been a direct result my impatience.

Common practice here to cut the back cut a inch or two higher. Keeps the butt from pushing back if the crown hits another tree on the fall

Thats true. however the higher your back cut the more you have to cut through your hinge for the tree to start moving, and then the hinge just breaks off entirely.

There’s a fine line and then it goes to crap fast I find a inch or so is good, anything beyond 1.5 “ pushing it

Depends on the size of tree I suppose. I often come up a bit on sketchy ones, just for peace of mind more than anything else. Otherwise I try and stay even or very slightly above.

Here’s what 80% of the stumps in my area look like. Sloping back cuts and no hinge wood is the norm, pretty scary stuff

:yikes:
...that's an other-worldly deed.
