I had a 1970 maverick back in 1984...my mom bought it new in early 71 and drove it for 172,000miles before I got it and swapped a 289 from an old comet into it....I also managed to get a spoiler and a hood from a 73 grabber and got them painted to match.

In that same year I started driving a 1974 Mercury Comet. :)

Sweet. I did it years ago with a gutless cruiser wagon for 5.0 mustangs. They were the big thing at the time. (They were not all that though)

Eric the car guy did a pretty good series of videos on Youtube of a Fairmont four-door he turned into a strip machine. The videos are long-winded but the build is good.

If I do one, I'll make it a two door (think Nomad Wagon) and power it with an LS.

Yeah mine looked stock a/c even worked. Was great for road trips with 5 friends. Lol.

I drag raced for many years. Built a lot of tubbed cars. I think a fox body two door wagon with big meats tucked under it would be the ultimate machine for a weekend racer.

I will be honest LS's are great crate motors, but they show no originality on the part of the builder...throw an LS in cause I have no skills is what I normally think of when I hear this stuff. Now if you want a straight up cruiser that just needs reliability with a couple of hundred hp then yes an LS is an easy way out....Me I will build that BB chevy form 40 years ago...that 440 dodge from 40 years ago, that 429/460 Lima block or that 390/428 FE block and yes even the humble windsors....

They do make 454+ cubic inch ls engines too...

Lol

I can see it both ways.

Just hard to over look the hp per dollar potential of the ls. I know of a few racers pushing 700-1000 rwhp out of junk yard 5.3 short blocks. Last a season or two. Spend 400$ and go again lol.

Forced induction and good top ends of course. But a bone stock short block...

Gws pretty much any other stock old school short block at those power levels.

I've built FE Fords, small block Fords, Mopars, etc....

My next build will be all about what works and why. Fox body Ford has a lightweight rack and pinion front end, plenty of room between the strut towers, and a rear sump oil pan works without mods. The LS is about HP per dollar, and less weight.

Not looking for originality, just wanna go fast cheap.

That would be a cool build. They can squeeze good power out of the 4bt.

My squarebody has a Goodwrench 350 with about 290k miles on it. Time for something new. I can't decide between a newer Vortec 350, a 6.0 LS, or go crazy, and find a 4 cylinder Detroit that would fit...

My grandson has a mega boner for old square body Chevys.
