Is this a 300 or 380?

Traded a few saws for this, homelite c7, locked up Lombard, jonsered dealer bag, used mcculloch parts. Interesting that it's stamped as both a 1-72 and 1-82. Interesting door to access the carburetor adjustments. Extremely interesting and dumb tight recoil and clutch cover setup for removing and installing the bar and chain. Any insight on the reason for it being stamped as 2 models and a purpose for the recoil clutch cover set up that has to have the bar nuts tightened with a box wrench?1000009964.jpg1000009963.jpg1000009962.jpg

Looks like the 1-72 and the 1-82 may have similar parts which can be interchanged, looks like you have a 1-72 there judging by the recoil/bar cover. Older McCullochs seem to have that style of bar nut, ones that get cranked down. Both my 200 and D-44 have cracks in the clutch cover from the bar nuts being really tightened down. You would be surprised how many people wrench their bar nuts down on newer Stihls and Huskvarnas....they end up losing one at some point and then really crank down on the others so not to lose them too.

Many blocks had multiple model numbers stamped at the factory as they could have become any one of a few different saws depending on the demand. On yours the 1-82 should be struck through indicating the saw became the 1-72.

McCulloch was the first chainsaw manufacturer to produce over 2,000,000 units many of which were the right hand start models. Maybe they weren't so dumb.

FWIW, I opened the boxes today (thanks Dan!).

In my case it is a 1-82 that is stamped with both 1-72 and 1-82 with the 1-72 struck through.

The 1-82 is the gear drive version and 1-72 is the direct drive 87 cc 1961-62 brutes.

This saw had a lot of experience...

There were also two 42" hardnose bars and some other goodies I have not fully investigated yet. The H&S spike has seen a lot of serious abuse, and the home made helper handle is really cool. I will find a way to include it in the display area.

Well it happened again. I brought this home in part of a three saw deal. I believe it to be a S44A due to the square muffler and the flywheel cover. Of course any of this could have been swapped out, so if you think otherwise please let me know. I think it may have been someone's part saw as it's missing the frame brace, the inner flywheel cover, the air filter cover, and the outer portions of the muffler. The piston and cylinder look good through the exhaust port. @heimannm I'm sure I'll be getting ahold of you.

Saws with the hockey mask cover over the flywheel were usually S44-A or S55-A. The 44/55 saws were real hot rods in their day. The D-44 has a stamped steel AF cover and the spark plug in the center of the head like the MAC10 kart engine. The others were die cast AF covers and the spark plug offset to the LH side.

I am sorry, this is not making any sense to me (probably since I don't own a 4-30 to 77 series), did the original saws have a metal gasket instead of a felpro type gasket?
