I will try to remember to look at the McCulloch Generator shop manuals tomorrow for more information. I am pretty sure I have some literature showing models like that.

Try it Ed. Right now you have a junk cylinder. If it doesn't hold you still have a junk cylinder.

It'll work on a cylinder with buggered up threads (maybe),but it sure as hell isn't going to hold an insert in that falls in & out of freely.

it depends on which insert you use. If you use the helical inserts then yes it probably will not work. If you use a thick wall insert it will probably work. You can buy them on McMaster-Carr individually and they use standard taps.

There are a thousand ways to skin the same cat .On this example a compound might work such as Lok-Tite quick metal press fit .How long it would last I have no idea .Of course a zillion types of inserts but to be accurate it would take a good drill press or a milling machine .In some cases drilling out to 18 MM might work but the length , reach and hole size might not work .You could weld the hole shut and retap to m14 but you'd have to have a heli-arc rig and the know how to use it .All else fails try another block .McCulloch made a blue zillion blocks in 57 MM bore size .Toss the parts in a box and wait it out .Sooner or later a donor will come along at least they always have for me .Stuff like this are not a race .

those are what I was referring to. I’ve used them in many applications and if I was wanting to fix a cylinder and thought the wire insert wouldn’t work I’d go this route. Easy to install and usually just use a tap a few sizes larger than the inside threads

FWIW I have a drawer full of inserts of many designs but nothing for a spark plug .I've got an antique Jaeger water pump with a 3 HP Wisconsin engine with a stripped out spark plug I need to repair or find another cylinder head and actually rering it .Shall we just say that old engine is tired .It was so weak I had to throttle the discharge down with a 2 inch ball valve .Torquey old thing , under load I doubt it would run much over 1200 RPM That thing must weigh 150 pounds .When I wore a younger mans clothes I could lift it but those days are long gone .

I think it's an AB .I found a couple of heads on flea bay .I've also got a a 15 HP twin and I think a VH4d ---30 - 34 HP .The later I had in mind to power a DIY bandsaw mill but those things suck down 4 gallons of gas per hour . So with that in mind I think it's going to be an 18 HP Briggs which is 5 quarts per hour

Yes, McMaster Carr.

I would also look at the Helicoil Save-A-Thread kit. You can find them at most auto parts stores for under $40 and get additional inserts as needed off eBay, etc.

Thanks for the AB parts thing but it's a back burner project ,I looked in up those things go back to the mid 1930's until some time in the late 40's .The pump was given to me in two or three 5 gallon buckets about 35 years ago .I used it in the 80's when I shoved out 5500 cu yards of dirt with a worn out 1943 D4 cat digging a pond . I wanted it 12 feet deep but after pumping it 4 times gave up at 10 feet .Deeper it got the more water it would hold and the longer it took to pump down .Took me all of one summer to get-er-done .I think it was 1981-82 .My word was that thing loud with a straight exhaust .

I might add those obsolete engines like Wisconsin, Hercules ,Waukesha ,Continental you can still find parts for them but they are not usually inexpensive .Those things were built battle ship tough, made for the long haul .

Yesterday I got a phone call that my pre-surgery Covid test came back positive, so I got off work early and decided to re-assemble my CP125 as much as I can. One of my tubular wrap inserts has walked off (along with a few other non-necessary parts), but at least I was finally able to make some progress on it. Turns out the n.o.s. bearings I got from Canada were just what I needed to fit the piston. Unfortunately, the n.o.s. crank needle set I got was unusable due to rust, but since the old ones had felt fine I just re-used them.

I think I recognize that background....

Fortunately mine has the clamp parts, but the wee little tube that goes in the wrap is mia. I know I had two when I gave one back to the owner, but since then it and the points box clamp have vanished. The saw doesn't have points so those don't matter, but I'mma have to custom fab up a new tube. Just another wee hiccup. Another problem I found is the CP crank had RH threads on the clutch side but the nut I saved off the parts SP had LH threads. 2 minutes of searching provided me with a nut, but it's little stuff like that that'll make a project drag on.
