So what do some of you do for air filters that are no longer available. I have an old 250 I'm working on and would like to replace the filter but I haven't found any that seem to be in any better shape than the one I have. I thought about some foam filter material and cutting it to fit but am a bit hesitant about that.

Ive used uni-foam filter material sewn to the sreen.

Do you think the uni-foam would work without sewing it to the old screen? The foam material I've seen and used before is thinck enough I wouldn't think it would need any support. My concern with the old filter is it seems to be deteriorating and I would think its a risk of getting into the cylinder as it comes apart. Of course truth be know I'll probably never use it but I never like putting a non-runner on the shelf

I blasted all of the old frocking off the filter first to avoid sucking it in the saw.
I bought a think sheet off Amazon.

eBay is always a good resource for old McCulloch parts.

McCulloch Chainsaw Air Filter Super 250 S550 450 1-51 795 1-43 380 D44 1-71 | eBay

I have a few NOS filters available, contact me for price and shipping options. I could probably find used one that would be O.K. as well.

You can also look into some Max Flow filter material. I have one or two cut from 1/8 or 3/16" thick Max Flow and they are a good choice for a replacement. I'm not sure if those products are still available as I looked at their website and can't find any mention of the filter media being offered.

Those filters pop up on Fleabay quite often. I think I might have a couple stashed somewhere that I'll never need. The only thing I have that they fit on is my Dad's old post hole auger with a 250 powerhead. Nobody had used it in over 30 years. This summer I cleaned out the carb and got it going so that I could help a buddy dig about 30 holes to plant his wife's new shrubbery. He has a fenced in back yard and my tractor won't fit through the gate. Fortunately we had had some rain recently so it drilled through the Georgia clay without any problem.
PM me if you want me to dig around for one of those filters.

I wouldn't want you to go to much trouble but if you run across one you want to part with I would be a buyer

Found them pretty quick. I don't want to cut in on @heimannm but I'll never use these. I would rather it go to a good home than continue to age in the bottom of a box. I can stick it in a padded envelope and send it to you for the cost of the postage, if you'd like.

D, you are a very generous man sir.
Seems like I never get down your way anymore, but the next time I do, lunch is on me.
Might even bring a saw or two and go play.

Let me amend that statement.
Pretty much everyone on here has been very generous with sharing info, leads on parts, tips, and general knowledge.
A good group of people who care about the old yellow and black.
I'm grateful to all that have helped me, and hope to return the favor in some way.

Well this is actually only my second Mac the first i got a couple of years ago, its a 10-10. I have kinda enjoyed working on it. I will probably never run it like many of my saws but I never like to put a non-runner on the shelf. I live in a quiet subdivision (until I fire up one of these old saws) and it just seems to make a better conversation when someone asks why I have old chainsaws lining the walls of my garage when I can answer "and everyone of them run." I have actually had better luck with this tillotson on the 250 than some in the past, I still have a little tweaking yet to go bur its actually doing good so far. Once I get one running like this, I will start with the wishlist and go through it with new gaskets and seals and clean it up good so even if it never runs it at least looks like its cared for sitting there on the shelf. If the need ever arises, which it has since I live in a tornado proned area, I will be the first one out helping clear some streets and yards and doing what I can, even if my saws are older than the neighbors I help lol.

Brent, I may get up with you sometime and see if can get you some more Macs or Poulans your way. After retirement, the next job has me on road so much got too many saws/and or projects. Need to send some stuff your way again. Ten series will stay, but have the Poulans, Homies, and other macs. I’ll be back here later in month….mean at home later in month.

Do you still have that red saw 450 Kevin? I can't remember if you sent it down the road or not.

You have a tendency to lean more toward these old gals, especially once you run a 10 series or two.
Those are just well made old workhorses that dont disappoint.
They have the torque and decent speed to get things done when you need them, and they arent too finicky.
Also made for real people.
Not for those who cant handle a little noise and vibration.
Ive seen folks swear by a heavy, slow saw just because it has antivibe and a quiet muffler.
End of day, it doesnt get any more wood cut. All I'm saying.
