Maybe I'd be better off to shelve the short block idea & just go with new rings in the 10-10A?It did run & cut when I first got it,but must've been on it's last gasp of breath. Then it died & I couldn't get it to start again. It was suggested that I try a new plug (there was nothing wrong with the old plug).I did a compression test & if I remember correctly it had about 100 psi.

100 psi is low but should still at least pop or run with low power. 130 is good. 150 is new. At least that's what I have found.

Here is what I found on that short block of yours.

The flywheel will line up fine and your good to go on that end. The clutch side I would get an early left hand clutch that has no key but has the holes for the rhs starter paw rivets. Lap it real well to the crank like Mark has said. Put the paws, springs and rivets into said clutch torque to spec, and you should be ok.

I have several used 10 series that get regular use and are fine workers. They all fall in range of 130-145psi compression.

That's because they're all rebuilt Kevin! :p
. 10-4. Thanks…getting old …those used 10 series are about 70% original and 30% rebuilt. Steve would have to kick me in middle about that…haha. Got another 100 ton finished…bed weigh 30,000 in three pieces. Got that together with crane and lined bed with 3/4” plate & fab 18” sideboards which add another 24,000lbs to bed. It is yellow so maybe I stick some Mac in it.28F0043C-82BA-4C15-8439-2BD2720A3A8A.jpeg35917EF9-ECCA-459C-90C4-48CA14DCE25D.jpeg

Actually use shielded .045 wire with gas mostly. Used about 400 lbs wire and 50 lbs 7018 5/32 and 10 lbs 7018 1/8.

Interesting! Had no idea you could use wire that small for 3/4 plate.

You can use a RH start clutch on the crankshaft with no keyway, the PTO side would be a LH thread but once the nut is properly torqued it won't come loose and the clutch won't slip on the crankshaft. Don't go overboard on tightening the clutch nut or you will crack the spider since the keyway in the clutch does weaken it quite a bit.

I ordered the parts I need for the clutch today from Bob Johnson.I sure hope it doesn't take 3 months to fill my order like last time.I've got 2 other clutches that only have one pawl spring in them & another clutch that needs the spring retainers. There's a guy in Oregon who sells mainly Homelite parts, but he has some Mac parts here & there. He had the pawl springs, but I sure as shootin' am not paying $5 for each little spring.I thinkl I'll pay $1 ea.from Bob.

I probably shouldn't say this, but I took the day off from working on the yellow saws & worked on a red one for my neighbor. It was a Homelite XL (I hate those little saws,Lol) that had no spark. The ignition module was bad & no fuel filter.I got it running for him,but it needs crank seals,a very common thing with the Homelites.

Neat stuff there JJ. If possible, I would like to have a copy of those instructions to add to my McKart book.

You got it Mark, plus I have some other literature that would be suitable for your collection.

Go power built a lot of stuff in the 60's .Fact I have a 580 West Bend in the shed with a go power tag on it but what it is I have no idea .

It might be a converted "five port" motor Al. Go-Power made a conversion kit for the West Bend 580 that turned it into hotrod of a motor.
