Bar and chain?
Sorry Poge,I forgot to tell you that I put a bar on,no chain.I thought that maybe the starter was binding up on the pawls by being too close. It didn't make a difference. If I ever get my order from Bob J.I can try that new clutch to see if that makes a difference. My order is probably around $500 & I've been waiting on some things since June that he forgot to send me in the last order.

Point was, check for a loose muffler or muffler innards making the mystery noise...
Poge, the muffler issue was a totally different post. You & a couple other guys here seem to think it makes a little dinging sound from time to time, when in fact is sounds downright dangerous, like something is going to tear apart.
The comment "let it rattle till something falls off" wasn't very amusing to me.If that were your saw & it was making that hell bound noise you'd be frantic in trying to get an answer just as I am to get it fixed.I've set the saw aside & have pretty much given up on it.If the new clutch does nothing, then I'll have to say it's got a bent crank,at which time it'll be stripped of all useable parts & the rest disposed of..

On a lighter note,I bought this PM10-10 on Feebay a few days ago & got it today. The muffler was hanging on by one bolt.I had to raid my muffler stash & get 2 more bolts. That took some time to fix since the PO had pretty much destroyed the locking tabs on the lock plate.I managed to bend some new ones out of what was left. The coil was loose & came with no mounting bolts,so I had to borrow them from another saw.It came with a chip in it,so no points to mess with. There was no ground wire on the coil either,I just happenedto have annother coil laying there that donated it's ground wire. Then the recoil came with no screws, good thing I had a few on hand.I went to put the recoil on & all it wanted to do was bind.I got another recoil from the saw that donated it's coil mounting screws. After I got it together I checked for spark & it had good spark.Next was to see if it'd fire on a prime & it did.The last thing I had to check was the fuel filter. The line was stuck to the bottom of the tank & it had no filter on it.I put a new filter on & filled the tank with fuel & pulled 15 times (that's my limit, then I prime it).I primed the carb & it started & kept running, but it wanted to cut out a few times & die.I knewit was ignition related,so I pulled the recoil again & found the coil wire where it ran through the little hole in the rear of the saw was shorting out on the cylinder shield.I rerouted the wire & it was good to go,I'll have to replace that wire.I ended up putting a 20 in.bar & chain on it because the saw has such good compression.I know the clutch cover isn't the right one,but that's what came with the saw.I'm looking for achain brake/cover for it,but can't find one as of yet.

Well some people have a sense of humor and evidently some don't but saying that it's nearly impossible to trouble shoot anything over the internet .A 10-10 righty is about 50 years old and Lord only knows how many people tinkered with it in that time .--and if if it were my saw, which it's not I don't get frantic about anything especialy on a chainsaw .If they frustrate me ,which they have they just go on the shelf for a spell until I think out and so far I always have given enough time .One time on an 042 Stihl that saw was punished for about 2 years before I got back on it .
One cannot expect to show up on a forum ,pop a few questions and expect some miracle fix fall out of the blue from somebody 500 miles away who has never seen the darned thing and never will .So saying that best of luck .:)

They can't?

There you go starting *s-word again poge. Just got to have the last word. Al is correct in his entire post. We have had no pictures, no videos of the said noise other that a clutch with missing spring guides. Didn't see you with some miracle fix for this man's saw in any of you post. None in mine for sure because it seems he is no longer interested in fiddling with this saw any longer. Has stated many times he just wants to strip it of good parts and junk the rest.

Al,it's the furthest thing for me to intentionally upset someone here, apparently I did that to you & I apologize. If you're making a joke, just put Lol at the end of it & all is well.Yeah,I've had saws set for 2-3 yrs.before I get to them, like this 10-10 from hell that dings like a dinner bell triangle when I try to start it.I have a great sense of humor, that's why I say I'll take it out back & use it for target practice.I've got a lot of things going on right now that are weighing heavily on my mind (healthwise) & I'm trying to cope the best I know how.One of my son's friends stopped by last week when I was working on this saw & he told me it was time to take it to the scrap yard, that infuriates me.He's the same guy who told me he was looking for a saw& every time I showed him one he said he wanted a saw with a chain brake & an auto oiler. Finally I told him to go to Home Depot & buy a plastic disposable saw, that was what he was pretty much looking for.I'm willing to put in the time to get a sawe running, but when it's beyond my knowledge that's what frustrates me.I've been only working on saws for less than 4 yrs.now & everyone seems to think I should be at their level, people who've been working on saws for 30 or 40 yrs.or more..

Sorry I didn't include a wink-wink and a couple smileys to help you understand it was a tongue-in-cheek remark. You obviously fall into the category of someone with no sense of humor.

That may very well be. No emoji needed.

Now don't everybody get their knickers in a knot over nothing .I wasn't pizzed just making a point .Now the thing about chain brakes a righty never came with one .Fact I have the last year of production 10-10 super that belonged to a tree trimer bad health caused him to retire .The saw almost looks brand new but the brake handle is missing in action .That's just the way those old farts were ,like I have a lot of room to talk .:)

And obviously you can't take an apology when one is presented.Forget my clutch issue as neither one of you wants to help resolve it.I'll find out stuff on my own like I usually do.Must be nice to have so much experience that you can look down your long noses at rookies like myself.

Speaking of old farts, I picked up a two man 12-25A that's just as old as you are just a few days ago. There's a lot on it that needs refurbed. Top of the tank has some good damage and the housing where the clutch sits in has a good crack and mag rot. Actually I also picked up an old Mall model 6 that's older than you are by a few years. It's in better shape than the 12-25, siezed up and dirty but complete. Might be able to make a runner out of it!

Some times you'd see those long bar two mans at farm auctions years ago .This was before it became popular to restore them and they sold cheap .Brad Snelling has a model 6 Mall restored to the point you'd think it was a new one .I have pictures of it some place .The only Mall I own is a model 12 which is a small one .However I have a Model M Bridgeport milling machine circa 1940 with a brass tag saying Mall tool company Chicago Ill .how it got to Ohio I have no clue .

On these vibrating 10 series it's not all that easy to figure out .Could be a number of things .One could be the key ways tearing out causing either the clutch or the flywheel to run eccentric .Here's two examples .Later on in production Mac eliminated the keyway on the clutch side which greatly reduced this problem .In digging out these things I have 6 crankshafts in that drawer ,Some righties ,some lefties ,points and solid state for Mac 10 series and two from Stihl Ms 200t's . How many I have in my shed in boxes I have no idea .

I have a McCulloch question that maybe someone might know or have an idea about. Any idea why they put the two round holes in the exhaust port in saws like the 10-10? Why not just one open port? Would a 10-10 gain anything by milling it open to one port? Just something I wondered about with these saws.

Some 54cc piston rings are not pinned. If a ring gap spun around to the exhaust side it would snag and break a bunch of stuff.

Never thought of that. Yes the 10-10's I've messed with don't have pinned rings

So, if theres to be parts stripping and a 12 gauge "coupe de gras" involved, I still need a few RHS parts for my 1-10.
All you fellas with deep bone piles keep us folks that cant find stuff in mind ok?
