To a point it's similar .The 650 has a straight crank,no taper . Of course it's an 87 cc like a super 250 which I think in my opinion that series is the best reed valve McCulloch ever made including the 125.

I'll look over my IPL's when I get time .I was not aware they used a flat back carb nor they offered 9/16" chain although I knew they did have the spur sprockets for same which appear on flea bay from time to time .

Say on that chain and bar business ,I am planning on a trip south come early Dec .Unless something goes awry I'll bring the 650,Super 44A ,125 and several others,Stihls and so forth .

I have a 7 tooth 1/2" 8 tooth 1/2" and 7 tooth .404 plus the bars and chains from 24" roller tip,.404,36" 48" .404 ,30" 1/2" .All bars should fit the 650 with a spur change . With a 404 24" if that thing is running right it should be dang near impossible to stall in a cut .Of course if Lee makes the scene he's probabley got 5 times the amount of Mac stuff than I do .

Al, I'm thinking of changing the sprocket to 1/2. I have way more
1/2 stuff than 9/16. Thought i had some 9/16 chain but could not
find it last night.

I looked up the IPL on my giant black book .Rather interesting as it listed a Tilley HL plus a flat back with a choke and a flat back with a primer .Not listed was a 9/16 sprocket but of course any 19/32 Mac sprocket would work .I wonder if it came that way or somebody put it on .

Mine has the flatback with primer.

Nice looking 650 Lee. Mark did you buy that Pro 72 you were looking at the other day? I have the 60 cc version, cheaply made but fun to run once ported.

There's 3/4 of a BP-1 on fleabay at the moment. 400 Bucks, but it needs a lot of parts. Probably belongs in the Dike, Iowa home for orphan and abused Mccullochs. If that snow blower doesn't take up all the room.:D

The snow blower project is certainly taking up most of my time, not quite all the space though. I was watching the PM72 but have invested too heavily in other projects to add more at the moment. I have the DE80/Titan 50 and Titan 57 saws. I have run the 57 a few times and it is O.K. but really can't hold a candle to my Stihl 036.

I will enjoy watching things go by for a little bit.

On another subject, I have/had three Super 250's and all were equipped with the flat back with a choke. I currently have on the floor a late model 250 with the short air filter cover and the primer flat back. Most of the 250's were fit with the Tillotson HL63.

The 250 super I have has a flatty with a primer .It took me forever to get it running.Doing the best I could knowing it needs a kit which is dang near impossible to find .I still don't know why in the name of good sense they ever used those things when they already had the good old Tilley HL .Of course with McCulloch you never know why they did certain things and never will .

Anyone have any luck rebuilding the primers? I got a flatback carb kit from Chainsawr a while back. It worked well for my 380. I didn't mess with the primer though. It don't work either...

Those primers are a sealed up unit and pretty much non-rebuildable as far as I know.

That's the problem with a primer system.if you can't get a squirt of gas in there you could pull your arm out of the socket and never get it started .Dumbest system any idiot ever made .

I bought a bunch of mac parts from a guy in Oregon a few
years back and he claimed he could repair the primers. I was
able to get one apart which is the hard part but mine was a
mess inside and didn't persue it any further. Guess i should
get back on it with another primer.
Original nos ones can get pricey and that's why i prefer to
swap to a Tilly.

How involved is it to swap to a HL? Linkage issues? What particular HL is needed - 63?

A Tilly 19 or 63 will work fine. The 63 has the stud on top which you
will need to cut the threaded portion off. I have installed many where
flatbacks used to be and it makes quite a difference in running. Tweek
the linkages and go.

Thanks. Other than the primer, the 380 runs great. I have a 250 and a 300 I might get running one day. One is missing the carb. I would rather put a more user friendly carb on that one.

You'd have to do something to hold the choke in .With a primer it's just a straight knob but with a choke you rotate it to hold in on the choke .I'm not sure if the primer type knob has the hole in it for the locking pin or not .If I can find the super 250 I'll check .Don't just leave it a push and hold down choke else it will take three hands to get it started .That's what they did with the 44 series .They must have had their heads in their behinds to dream that one up .

Thanks for the heads up. If I ever get around to working on these i will keep it in mind. I will need a bigger shelf in a bigger space before I work on too many more of the old Mac's though. Or I need to sell some of the saws currently taking up shelf space. Hopefully a combo of both!
