Ive got several elms. Not Dutch elms I'm sure. They get fairly large for around here. 24" plus.
Absolutely right about splitting. Only thing worse is Sweetgum. Grain is like Chinese finger cuffs.
I ran across a small one about 12" in diameter that I tried to split with the maul, and was actually able to. Wasnt easy, but it went. It was green, so maybe that helped. Most times, the maul just bounces off. With Sweetgum, the maul just sticks, whether green or dry. Hate that stuff...

"Dutch elm" is a reference to a disease that killed off almost all of the American elms .Originally found in the hold of a cargo ship full of elm logs in I think in New York harbor in the 30's I think

Sounds like a conversation we"ll be having 30 years from now about ash and hemlock. Kind of depressing that the most advanced civilization in history "can" do something about these problems but $$$ is the limiting factor.

I never really figured out what a reed muffler was supposed to do but assumed it was like a power valve on a tuned pipe dirt bike .Everyone I had had a rusted out spring so it didn't work any way or was rusted shut .I think I still have them in a box some place because I seldom throw anything away .I just forget where they are at .Fact I still have those f---ked up big fat below the cylinder mufflers from the 850's in a box someplace too . I think they tried to make them quiet but forgot all about how they ran .That's must have been before they made ear plugs because there is no hot preforming quiet saw I'm aware of .--as I type with a ringa ding in my right ear .

Some reading attached. McCulloch's patent application for the sound attenuating reed type muffler.

If you search "McCulloch Motors Corp Patents" there is so much stuff they were into.

I read it and it's just the law of physics regarding sound attenuation by bouncing opposing sound waves off one another .I was a navy submarine sonar tech and it's a very old method and in fact the so called "stealth " aircraft use a form of it although it attenuates radio waves .Similar principle different source .All that said it's not my favorite type of McCulloch muffler cover .I might be a restorer but I'm not a "purist ".

Like that bar Chief.
My favorite color scheme.
I think they may have come from the "McCinderblock" series of saws. My dad put one on his 1010S late model. Looks great with the black filter cover, recoil, and clutch covers.

Those bars were a cheaper option, no replaceable sprocket nose and the crinkle finish looks good on a new bar but does not hold up to the groove closing tool. They are good looking when they are in good condition.

Yeah I almost bent it just filing the burs off! Its ruff looking but physically not in bad shape. I can see why the speedtip bar was more desirable.
The Ms. Calls it the "Murder Hornet saw".

I'll have to get a picture of dad's 1010S next time I'm there. It looks good with the black long clutch cover, black recoil, black/yellow bar, and black air filter cover with red decal. Think it also has the black oil tank cover.
Only yellow is the tank/rear handle and the shroud.

Now look what you did .Made me move about 25 saws so I could find it .I think this might be one of the last years they made a 1010 it also being a 1010S .It was given to me by a retired tree trimmer who bought it new and didn't use it that often .It had the original 20" bar and McCulloch branded chisel chain .The chain brake has been removed which is typical of what a trimmer would do .It runs fine but I see no use in using it to scuff it all up as I have more powerful units in my herd .This same guy gave me a Mac 700 that was needled and with a donor now runs good .That one does get some run time

Thats a good looking saw.
If the weather gets better, I'm supposed to go fishing with dad Friday. I'll try to get a picture of his. Never seen one with a black filter cover.
Have you seen my PM700?
That thing is minty. Couldnt have had many hours. Look at the rear handle. The bar is a NOS I found. The original was an 18".0229202310_HDR.jpg

Every so often you can find a cream puff of a saw although it's rare .I have found three so far .That 1010S ,A 105 that sat in a repair shop for 25 years with a broken recoil and an 805 I stuck an 850 engine in .It's more blind luck than anything to even find one .I've got a few pristine 10 series McCulloch bars but I don't use them or seldom do .
Every so often if I think about it I try to remember to start them and maybe make a cut then blow the dust off .With anything with an engine sitting a long time doesn't do them any good .Fact I've got an 084 Stihl I know I haven't fired up in at least 6 or 7 years .

I am making a little road trip this week into next week. Yesterday morning as I passed from Cheyenne to Laramie WY I got there just as they were reopening I80, closed due to snow and high winds on Monday night.

Laramie at noon on Tuesday...

Going over the mountain there were places the snow looked to be over a foot deep on the side of the interstate but I didn't dare stop to take any photos as the traffic was solid from Cheyenne to Laramie with no place to pull over with the snow just pushed out of the two lanes.

This morning I picked up a McCulloch 170 Welder with the case in Vernal, UT and passed through the Flaming Gorge on my way.

Beautiful day in UT, rather warm in ID and Eastern OR.

I'll post some photos of the welder and the case in a day or two.

I have one like that but no mint bars. I also have a very nice 10-10s and a pro mac 10-10 , my S needs a green oiler button to be correct though. 20200131_155638.jpg 20191220_160636.jpg

McCulloch welder and the case for the leads.

20200611_163751.jpg

I believe the unit in the box is a rectifier to convert this AC welder to a DC welder, I will investigate further to see if it is from McCulloch or is someone just put it in the box.

My set up for the 2020 PNW GTG.
