Hi Tim! I'm assuming you are talking about the 1-86. I got frustrated with it back in the spring and shelved it. First my fuel tank gasket leaked and ruined my paint and after 3 attempts its still leaking, then I broke the pull cord trying to get it to run right, then the starter decided not to engage any more, oh, the oiler wont work and the gearbox gasket is leaking too. [emoji35]
Other than that, it's great lol.

I guess sooner or later we saw enthusiasts end up with one like that.

I've punished them and banished them to the shelf for couple of years until I got over my mad on .Then when I cooled out fixed them in less than an hour .It does absolutely no good the flog them with a BFH .
Sometimes just simple stuff escape a person .Recently on an old Jeep it took me 4 or 5 years to figure out the timing .The only thing wrong was it did not have a ballast resister in the ignition system and was jumping the spark all over the place .--things happen

Well the boss lady and I got about a cord bucked, split, hauled, and stacked yesterday. Felt like way more, being this is our first major "workout" for the season.
Still another couple of loads on that water oak thats been down about a year.
Took the 700, 1010, S25DA, and CS4400 Echo over.
700 was acting out of tune initially, so I fiddled with it for a few then sidelined it. 1010 ran perfectly. Echo either got old mix left in the carb or plug went bad. Still hasn't attempted to make noises, so gonna work on that later. Poulan gas cap gasket split, so no bueno there.
Picked the 700 back up after an hour or two. It started up and ran perfect for the rest of the day. Maybe it just wanted to give the others some time, and not hog all the fun. Noodled several knotty sections with it. That thing still impresses me with its torque!

Be careful, other side of that coin is how many years of your life you wasted on it!
It depends on how you look at it. Wasted time seems to be learning time unfortunately. However sharing the experience with others may save them time someday. Wasting your time to save someone else's isn't really wasted in the end as I am sure, others have done the same for you.

Some chainsaws are easy to figure out, some present a challenge .One that threw me for a loop was the oil pump on a Partner P-100. After some thought after I had replaced every o-ring and gasket it dawned on me a prime might get it going and it did .Should have done that in the beginning .
On more popular models information is easy to obtain but on some you just have to figure it out for yourself .Lots of info via the internet on many things but not every thing .

I seem to be cursed with minor problems that take years to figure out. As an example, my tractor had a bit of a miss for years. Tried all the usual fixes and just decided to use it until the miss got so bad I could easily see what it was. The service manual says to set the timing at 2500 RPM, a speed which the Continental Z134 never reaches in real life. I decided to experiment with the timing at a more realistic 1500 rpm. With the factory setting, it was something like 16 degrees BTDC which seems like alot for an ancient low compression engine. After a bit of experimentation, I discovered the sweet spot of 11 degrees, and its been great ever since.

FWIW that engine will run at 4,000 RPM however with the governor it won't . When Hillary went to the south pole using TE20's they had to set the r's that fast to be able to pull the loads .As a little tip that said because of the age those Continental engines have a tendency to become sloppy because the brass bushings on the distributors wears out .Danged shafts jump up and down .On the other hand you can't really wear a Cont.engine out because they are designed to be rebuilt forever .Tough little engines .

More importantly, designed to be rebuilt by farmers! I have seen publicity pictures of them with the heads off sitting in an Irish farmyard. I have also seen how (some) farmers "repair" things.....

The little Fergys are just about like McCulloch chainsaws being with any kind of maintenance they run forever .I would not be surprised if 75-80 percent of the number of the TO series produced are still in operation world wide .So many as a matter of fact there now is an aftermarket full of parts available for repairs .I might also say these things over the years have only increased in the price they fetch .

The Fergies and their Ford cousins are just awesome. I think the low governed speed is good for longevity. Never had mine apart, but looking at pics all the components look like they were designed for an engine twice the size.

Snowing and 30mph wind gust made me get cabin fever real bad! Ran out to the shop to find something to do and remembered i was given this left hand 10-10a a few months ago. Just cleaned and re- gaped the points and wiped it down. Tank was clean so i poured in some fuel and it came to life and held a tune real well. I noticed the handle was drilled for external adjustments so i swapped in some of the neat looking early constant velocity type rods. Also this saw has had a replacement block at some point. Mac did not paint replacement cylinder assemblies. It runs real well, made 3 cuts in 16" oak before i nearly froze to death!:D

The Continentals are wet sleeve engines ,Fords are dry sleeve. HP is pretty close .Can pepped a little with an over bore kit on the Fergys . by about 4-5 HP also at higher comp ratio .Takes a z-120 up t0 Z129 power and a Z129 to about Z134 power .They also have an over bore for the Z 134 that takes the piston from 3 5/16" to 3 3/8 " Both my TO 20's have the over bore kits . Now the problem with an over bore is if you lug them hard for a long time they will over heat probably because of the boosted compression ratio. Just not enough radiator I guess in the heat of summer with a souped up engine running a 6 foot flail mower in two feet of weeds .Just like a draft horse, needs a rest every so often .

Noticed them plates on bench behind saw. Looks like the WV relatives lost something. Good job on the saw too.
