Found this 1010A today. In pretty bad shape. It was outside on a rotten pallet. Had rusty water puddled in the muffler, and locked tight. Got it home. Pulled the recoil cover. Nastiest thing on the inside! There were actually cockroaches in there. Cockroaches dont like brake parts cleaner BTW.
Pulled the spark plug. Shined the light in there. Theres some rust, but not oxidized. Sprayed in some penetrant and gave the fly wheel some taps with the plastic mallet.
That sucker moved, I could not believe it!
Carb and linkages are all there. Missing the clutch cover. It May be lying around. I'll have to look when I go back. Otherwise, its intact. May be able to save it with rings, bearings, and seals.
He Also had a worn bit complete 7-10 auto out there. It turned over and felt like decent compression. Didnt want to part with that one. I'll keep asking. I want one of those. He gave me an 019T Stihl that he said he wanted to keep last time I was there, so who knows.1112191734a.jpg 1112191943.jpg

Not to worry a 10-10 can get pretty sick and survive .They are pretty tough old birds .Chances are good with a little douche with a good penetrating oil if it's hung it will free up and if the carb is not toast, has spark and half ways good seals it will run . Carb rebuild kit, seals are relatively inexpensive . Good luck

Yep. I'll keep that in mind Steve. If its worth saving I'll probably need stuff.
Can the air filters be bought still? Ive gotten plenty of the flat ones for the super, but this is one of the old curved ones.

The old curved ones show up on eBay from time to time, but they are awful proud of thwm when they do. Am sure there are a few squirreled away, but would probably take some talking to get them.

Flea bay goes bonkers on old filters ,like they are made of gold .You just have to wait them out .Being a patient type of guy I landed 4 brand new OEM filters for a P100 Partner/Mac 1000 for 20 bucks free shipping when they try to get 30 a pop. That's just the way it rolls on old parts --on any thing .

I hate paying crazy prices for stuff, but a new air filter for a Stihl can be $20-40 easy, I alway *b-word when I buy a 125 clutch for 30-40, a Stihl 461-661 clutch is almost $80!! I try and justify some of the prices by comparing them to newer saws, I try to shop and be patient on most stuff and find deals!

Is a heavy cloud of blue smoke on start up indicative of an issue with the auto oiler?

PM 700.

It had been run on 16:1 and it may still be clearing out. [emoji848]

Most of my 10 series smoke a bit on initial start up. Usually if the oiler is leaking they will smoke anytime they are running and have whiteish grey smoke.

After they get some age ,which they all have now the impulse operated Mac oilers leak some into the crankcase .Unless it's real bad I wouldn't worry about it .I had a mini that leaked so bad it hydro locked the piston .I just bypassed the pump and used the thumb button .WTH it was a mini and I certainly wasn't going to lose any sleep over it .

Don't even worry about the spike Will. Just get a chain and a bar on er and let er go!
Sounds good! These things don't care about the finer points. They are basic beasts.
Love seing your journey to get this thing going. Enjoy it for what it is. Rough but more than up to the task if you are.

Just for general info regarding the "white death " the Homelite in my avatar had a case of it in the oil tank .It ran when I got it but it's hard to say how long it might have sat idle before I got it .At any rate I epoxied it ,can't remember if I used JB or not but never had a problem with it since .On a Mac 125 the tank had froze the fuel cap which took a pipe wrench to break it loose which of course broke the cap .Had to find another one .
Any more on the big reed valves I grease the threads on the caps to try and stop this from happening .Just a suggestion .

Well I dont think this is salvageable. Came from the 1010A that a guy gave me last week. I knew it was seized, just thought it was from sitting outside.
Turns out, it was out there because the wrist pin bearing grenaded at a high rate of speed. One of the needles hopped over in the transfer port and caught a ride all the way to the top of the cylinder before it lodged firmly back in said transfer port.
I may still be able to use parts. Dad has a 1010A that he let a tree spin off the stump and land on. If the power head is good on that one I can make one from two.1118192003a.jpg 1118192003.jpg
