We have some mulberry trees, but I've never been able to get a single ripe berry off of any tree near here. The birds always get them first. They never produce well to begin with. Our elevation is 1900 feet or so, and we get late frost that kills the blooms most years.

The ol' timers all said that the mulberry was the best berry but I don't know anyone nowadays that has ever tasted one. By the time you see the giant bird turds full of seeds, there all gone.

I've got about 100 or so in the barn....but that ain't gonna last long when the weather cools off in the fall.
I don't know if we will ever be a big enough farm to need that much hay. My long term goal is to have a herd of mammoth donkeys for milk, riding, work, and breed stock for mules. Really my dream would be to have a herd of Bactrian camels for riding, working, dairy, and fiber, but I don't think that will be realistic in my lifetime.

How much land do you have?

About 25 acres, but not all of it is useable and at the moment about 23-ish acres are forest. We have maybe an acre and a half of land that has been cleared. Of the land that is cleared 1/3 acre is blueberries, 1/3 boggy/wet ground, about 1/4 acre of yard/garden, and the rest is driveway/house. I cleared a 1/3 acre area behind the house to push back the forest and create a "log yard" for milling and clearing more land. The alpacas live in a 1/2 acre paddock that is half sloping grass (well it's growing), and the other half is wooded for shade. Working on clearing an additional two acres that will be fenced in for the alpacas and chickens. I'm sure my fraction math isn't accurate, but it gets an idea. We bought this place back in 2018 after visiting the area and checking out houses. The house was built in 1976 and was used until 2018 as a vacation property. It's been three years of fixing the house and making the land usable. I'll have to take some pics tomorrow before I get started on the mill. Everything is a bit of a mess at the moment though!

If you have good timber, you might sell some to finance clearing. Just a thought.
