Really interesting, thank you sharing the pictures. I have 200mls of ultra left and although it’s all I have used for the last few years in both my own equipment as well as anything I service and repair, I’m going to try something different. Those red armour pictures gives me a perspective that I haven’t seen before. I can’t get red armour here in Australia, sadly so I may try the other popular choice of Amsoil saber. Hmmm
Did you mean Amsoil Dominator!;)

I’m into the rabbit hole now…

I decided to pull apart a hedge cutter I’ve ran about 5 tanks through using stihl hp ultra at 50:1 (anything I buy to onsell gets 50:1, my own equipment gets either 32:1 or 40:1). Almost bone dry on the rod, counter weights were bone dry and so was the bearing, a small amount had accumulated at the transfer area. I have been scratching my head as to why there was an oil film in my chainsaw when I checked and all I can think of is I was running it rich for break in. I also had 40:1, but I don’t think that alone would make much difference.

Post edited to add a picture of it:

For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure the Stihl ultra we get here in the states is a totally different oil than the Stihl HP Ultra those overseas get.

@Looney661 That is alot of interesting reading.

I've been running Motul 800 for the past two years. I'm happy with it. I was fortunate to get drawn in the Sawmikaze fundraiser and picked up the Red Armour. I'll keep the ope I run each of them separate and see how they compare after a year of running.

I've ran HP2, HP Ultra (hate the smell), Golden Spectro, Briggs & Stratton, Yamalube, Walmart brand, Boat oil, no name brands of all kinds... so far I've not had an oil related problems. Always ran at least 40:1 or 32:1 and as much as 24:1 with questionable oil. Just my two cents...

Been running it for over a decade in all my 2t applications , always surpasses my expectations.

From what I've seen and heard it's trash no matter what part of the world it's made in.

I’d suggest that’s user error rather than the oil.
I wouldn’t use my customers OPE condition as a validation on if an oil is good - most home users who have no idea what they are doing will be part throttling their ope, never truly getting them hot and running dull chains causing their saws to be 4 stroking in the cut. Stihl hp ultra is a good oil, but it needs proper engine operating temperatures and full throttle.
I'll tell the logger's who's saws I've rebuilt that ran Stihl ultra and that it's good oil
And that they don't know how to mix oil correctly
When I want to get cussed out.
I never had a issue with orange bottle
And don't really care what anyone runs
I run boat oil
Schaeffer's tcw 7000 40/1
And just mixed up 8 more gallons that'll last a few weeks.

What I have found is when I have even a slight cold, stihl hp ultra gives me the worst sore throat. When I’m well I don’t mind it, in fact I don’t even notice a smell, but that’s probably because I’m so use to it.

looking forward to getting the bottle of Amsoil Saber I’ve ordered. I must admit, there was a guy in the park running his rc petrol car, that took me back to my motocross days, I wish I asked him what he was running, it’s safe to say motomix doesn’t bring back any memories lol. Maybe it was a ca

I think ultra is ultra. It’s the HP Super that’s FD rated and available in most other countries and is probably a decent oil

Probably Klotz or an oil with castor oil in it.
