Around 1989-1990 I replaced the timing set in the 400 big block of a late 1970's Chrysler Newport. Cam gear had those infamous phenolic teeth. It'd shed seven teeth. Engine ran like poop until the timing set swap. IIRC, it had about 101K miles at the time.

Okay, cleaned the points again and it started. Held me foot in it steadily and started dropping rpm's after about 20 seconds. Giving it more throttle made no difference.

Swapped the coil and checked the point gap and was too wide. Reset and it started but is still running rough. A couple of times it smoothed out for a few seconds and then it starts backfiring. Have now blown out the left side exhaust donut to go with the leaking manifold gaskets...

I am thinking it may be in the advance in the distributor.

Checked current at the coil with a test light. Ran a hot wire from the battery to the coil and it ran without backfiring and seemed to have more power but eventually died out

You are correct. 127 is the old highway, 27 is the newer one I reckon. It was a small tree service set up with everyone. We had been looking at stuff all day and all I'd seen was some overpriced 029's. I had given up all hope. We ran across them and I asked them how much for the 2100. The guy said I dunno what that is but the saw is $20. I couldn't get the money out fast enough.
