Husqvarna 51. Ditched the tiny factory deflector, opened the hole to 1.300" x .700" and used one of Joe's medium deflectors with a course grid stainless screen.

Hope nobody minds if I ask:
Muffler mods shown above, they look pretty cool and I know they do increase power too. But my question is - have any of you ever had the problem of sawdust or dirt or anything finding its way through the outlet and into the cylinder?
I worry that as the saw rides in the bed or backseat that wind or gravity can cause that to happen so I'm personally a little afraid to use one.

Joe at HMWF modified my mufflers and I'm considering taking out the spark arrestor screens, (figure that'd improve flow even more) but I'm worried doing that is like removing a screen stopping crap finding its way in there and might not be worthwhile, I have heard the simple removal of said screens is beneficial for power/heat getting out.

Maybe I worry too much, but if I had a round outlet hole I'd be putting a little rubber cap on it or something when not running saw. In any of your experience would removal of the screens be worthwhile? Is my worry unfounded? My mufflers are modified by gutting all baffles and increased outlet size but they look almost stock to an untrained eye, no cap option.

If Joe already enlarged the opening, removing the screen may not be beneficial. I would discuss this with him. Just because opening a muffler adds power does not mean opening it more will add more power. I may cause your idle to be irregular, or you may actually loose power (even if it sounds stronger).

I guess you can always try it to see. Do some timed cuts before you remove the screens, then see if the saw really gets any stronger. Keep us posted on the results.

I never worried about stuff getting in when the saw isn't running. I have heard of mice and mud daubers getting in of stored in a barn.

Alright thanks, I thought at least it might let more heat out which would help on long extended cuts like this big 40"+ Red Oak I've been into lately, now I shot Joe a message too since you suggested to see what he says.

But I can give my opinion once I try it, It'll be a few days til I get out to cut again as its been raining here last 2days and I got a lot to split/stack before I cut/haul anymore and gotta wait for stuff to dry.

if you are concerned of getting something in there you could put a rubber stopper in there

This $220, filthy faded screamer has a muffler that is so rusted, you can't remove the bolts. Stripped out trying.

Gobs of compression. No air leaks. Lots of power, no need to take it apart if she dont want to.

Took a pair of pliers an tore the screen cover off er. Took a 16d spike and hammered few fkn holes. That way there, no metal shavings from drilling.

Echo CS 670. Tunes out right at 13,700 rpms with a smidgen ah no load burble.

I’ve always been a stickler for having screens in whatever muffler mods are done. Maybe it’s because I’ve seen enough wildfire to know what it can do, and tend do cut a fair bit when I can start a wildfire… Even if that may sound mildly dramatic.

I can also say with a high degree of confidence that if you’re running a clean burning mix, your screens won’t get filled with carbon and your muffler will flow just fine. If not, just pull them out and clean them from time to time.

I can’t imagine you’d get an appreciable buildup of anything through that small of a hole, though.

I took the screens out of a few mufflers. I was fine with it until one day I cranked one up and started smelling fried stink bugs. I put them back in after that. I did set the bark of a dead white oak on fire once. It was my old Husqvarna 50 with the screen removed. Chain was getting dull and only had a couple cuts left. It didn't blaze up but was smoldering and smoking. I had already drank all the water I had with me so I peed on it and put it out.

All my MM'ed saws have their factory stock screens.
If You max out the muffler hole under it , it don't matter much in performance yet You retain some sparks and keep anything from entering the muffler.
