I wanted to update on the exhaust screens question that I brought up.. I spoke to Joe and he said "you can remove the screens, removing them might help maybe 1-3% but nothing major"

I have since tried running the saws both with and without them, and I'd swear that having the screen out effects engine temps on my two smaller saws (especially 550xp) run about 5-10° cooler and sound a little better too.. the 592 seems unaffected regardless of wether screen in or out but that one uses a larger mesh and even more open muffler-box to begin with.

The 550 are very restricted and need a large factory opened up and or extra port put in , as I did mine without a screen, I don’t run screens unless required, per example IMG_1194.jpeg

Right, well I can see by comparing the deflector on mine with the one you have there that Joe must-have opened up the hole a bit and removed any internal baffles and added a new deflector.. I like the screen for the fact that it'll keep any junk outta there and am probably just gonna get a coarser mesh, the one on mine was VERY fine mesh and had gotten a little bit clogged w/carbon here's what it looks like now, you can see the difference

And since I had all the gear out I decided that 3 months after it hit the bench for a muff mod I'd do the same for my S&S 346.

Full disclaimer, the saw came back to me with a really nice pipe style muffler but here in CA spark screens are a must in my opinion so I opted to replace the pipe. Again, nothing wrong with the pipe muffler but fire safety is a big concern and the screens are required for cutting on gov't land.

On this guy I decided to replace the oem outlet due to limited space for a 2nd deflector. The hole came out funny due to the original hole, but it's a freakin muffler outlet so who cares. A few more self tappers from the bin and voila! A nice, big, screened outlet. We'll see how the top cover holds up but I can always add heat tape.

Since I had the 361 on my bench for re-assembly I decided a muffler mod was in order. Nothing fancy, just a deflector and some coarse mesh screwed on and a dremeled out hole in the side of the can.

Did you fab that deflector yourself? It fits quite well.

There's a box of parts here that theoretically could be assembled into a MS361. I don't think I've touched the muffler on it yet, but will before she runs again...

Nope, some dude on ebay sells the deflectors and screen as a kit so I just went that route.

I bought some from eBay that I haven't tried yet. Stainless steel, 4 of them on one strip with a strip of screen. I tried to cut one off but my aviation snips wouldn't cut it. Is that what you got?

Yep, I used the last 1/4" or so of the snips and just nibbled away at it. Once you get it started it's easy, but if it rolls it's a bugger to snip. I found a dremel with a cutoff wheel was the cat's meow for the screen, fyi.

I bought it last year I think. Maybe I'll get back to trying it one of these days.
