254s are getting rare. I like the 262s since they are the same physical size but you can make them all run the same really. Some may argue your 61 is just as good too once ported. Your 61 has a bigger carby feeding it since you swapped it

Make sure that problem with the chain running is the idle and not the clutch springs.
