Why do they put ceramic coating on headers? So the heat goes out the exhaust and not into the engine bay. A painted bar does the same, remove the paint and it dissipates heat better. Do I think it makes one iota of difference to the saw? Not in this lifetime

Im kinda wondering if the bare bar is acting as a heatsink for the cylinder and lowers temps ? Either way I respect Redbulls determination and quest for cooler temps and faster times and find his test interesting and eye opening

Look Redbull is learning stuff as he does all this testing and is becoming a pretty darn good at removing variables to get decent results. Discussions here help him question what he's doing and why and that's good. But I ain't gonna diss his work or put a negative tone over the contribution's he makes. This testing stuff takes time, money and brains to do & I bet all of us have been supprised by some of the tests he has done. Its easy to armchair criticize much harder to leave the armchair & do what he does. Good on him for doing so!

What im saying is does a painted motor run much hotter when it's painted or the same temp?
Does an air cooled motor run ANY measureable amount hotter when painted?
Does that apply to this situation?
brain is melting...

Cow farts are a leading cause of global warming. If Obama finds out that you are further contributing to global warming by letting heat out of your chainsaw bars, you may get thrown in jail. Paint is on bars for a reason....keeping heat inside the bar will keep the earth cooler.

surrounding cooling air just like a radiator or cooling fins

It's got to get from the bar to the air, no? So the surface of the bar should be the hottest measurable point, correct?

Let me put it in terms you can relate to. If I'm cooking a batch of triple fudge brownies I heat the oven to 350°. The oven is acting as an insulator. I take a temperature reading on the outside surface of the oven, it reads 85°. If I remove the insulation, by opening the door, and take a reading on the inside it's going to be very close to 350°. It's not magically going to now be 45°, like my glass of milk.

I'm gonna lave the coating on 'em if that's ok. Just so they look nice longer. It wears off pretty fast. Can I keep the coating? Thansp.

So more heat is coming off of it, but the temp reading is 40° cooler? Where did the heat go?
That I cant anwser. But its the same reason they leave radiators, condensors, and evaporators bare. Better absorption and heat transfer and the same reason they keep all thoso coils clean
