Hey guys. Couldn't find a new members thread so I'll just jump right in. I sell auto parts for a living, and do all my own mechanic work. I've built a few engines.

I'm new to the realm of 2 strokes. I've already thrown my 4 stroke performance rulebook out the window.

Anyway, I'm building an early model 015 AV, and I just can't put things back together the way they came apart. I can't. I modify virtually everything I work on, whether it makes sense or not. So, we'll call this build Probably Pointless.

I get it. It's a low power, small displacement saw. But.....

What can I do to improve it? Especially on the exhaust. I want it to sound good, even if it doesn't improve power much.

Welcome to the forums...you are in the correct place! You will find people here that keep their stuff all original, others mod the heck out of them. It's just like cars, but smaller. There are many experts here that get in as deep as porting cylinders and Frankenstein modes, others will do more minor stuff like muffler mods.

Calling the build probably pointless is not the right term, it should be "Learning Experience"! Good luck with it, I am sure others will chime in with potential options for you!

Much thanks. But, I'll still call it that because it sounds funny.

Getting some piant today. Going with Chrysler Hemi Orange, but only because there isn't such a thing as Ford Orange. Chevrolet Orange is out of the question.

1. Because it's ugly
2. This saw would probably never run

I'll put up some pics later, but the "STIHL 015 AV" decal dissolved off the air filter cover. Not sure what I want to do about that.

My biggest fear is the carb. I'm not very good at tuning them, but I've rebuilt more than I can count. Most automotive, though. I've heard these old Walbro's can be a pain to get right.

It's not too hard to tune old carbs.
Hey, I own a Chevy and it runs great.
As MasterMind said these are problematic saws...

They are a challenge for me too, but there are a lot of good videos that walk through the process. Give it a good clean, replace the diaphragms, set it to base config and go from there. If you have a tach then that might help you dial it in until you get an ear for it. I like my tach!

The orange 015s were plagued with issues when they were new....

Good luck?
I am hoping that I have fixed all the issues with my 015 L. A guy gave it to me because he figured I could fix it and keep it after I did. He was right. It rests on a shelf today, all ready to use. By some miracle I never have had to take it all the way apart:

It might be more powerful (and heavier) than most top handle saws sold today. Not much plastic on it. Cheers!
