We'll, there you go. You could be missing 1000 rpm or so of >10hp on a ported 3120. I wouldn't rev it full throttle out of the wood though, but that's just me.

If a 3120 is limited to 9500, I'd get a coil that lets it rev higher. I saw a dyno graph of a ported 3120 pushing 10hp or more at 10,500rpm. I didn't know they were limited to only 9500.

Me too. That's why I'm asking about installing an old style coil/flywheel combination vs only installing an unlimited (272) coil.

Sourcing both is the issue.

IF you can get both, it’s a simple process, if you can’t, you just have to reshape the coil ends a fuzz and re-index the flywheel. I don’t even have a keyway on mine, and it’s got 30 hours of pure milling or cutting over 48” stuff

I can find an early flywheel without issue, but knowing the part number for the early coil would be helpful if anyone knows it.

From my understanding, late flywheel works with 272 coil but earlier flywheel is paired with earlier coil. The flywheels only differ in the location of the keyway.

What would really be beneficial to know is if there is a downside to using the unlimited 272. I don't want to blow up an expensive saw.

If you want that style of tensioner on your 395, you can modify a used 3120 clutch cover to fit on your 395. A local guy here that mills has
that set-up. The 3120 is a great saw for a mill but you have to watch keeping the tune in line with the rev-limited ignition.
Man. That’s so obvious I never considered it. I need to find someone around here willing to hook me up with a 3120 cover so I can do a write-up on modifying a 395 to accept it!

Actually, you need to modify the 3120 cover. I'll be taking measurements for a member so I'll post them up here when I get to it.

Changing just the coil is cheap and easy. Then tune your modded carb for high end just like any other saw. I like mine barely blubbering out of the cut and then cleaning up immediately when under full load.

If you put a 20,000 coil on the saw it won’t make it run 20,000 rpm.

I cant comment much on it but have used one for a couple of days cutting for a friend. A very good strong saw, I would think it ideal for a mill and would have no hesitation in getting one. As for them stop making the model it happens to every saw but you should get parts for many years to come. One thing for sure is it will be working for you long after battery models have become paper weights.

IH,
Some saws were simply born to mill. No changes required. The seller is a well respected, awesome guy on any forum he's a member of. If u want to be a weirdo, he does a have a ported "milling recipe" which is very speedy on 18 ft ripcuts. Fkn thing over-oils 42" bars. Don't miss my 881 mag or my 3120:
