Excellent info. So is trial and evaluation still the best way to figure out what carb is best for a particular saw?

There are many posted in the saw vid thread.
Don't want to clog this thread up.

As this thread is on topic right now,,,, I had my fingers in a old Kawasaki strimmer (weed Wacker, to some guys)
Now this thing has some grunt when it works... but as of late last year it was a pig to start..

So as stated, I got my fingers in it as I thought the compression was low and just maybe the ring end gap was part of the problem.. anyhow this port is what I found.. I did not get timing no’s. I also honed the bore to help hold a bit more oil hopping to up the compression, and I did not remove any carbon. Cos that would lower it.

Edit: the ring end gap seemed fine. Ie,,very small, and it seems to start easier now. But time will tell..

So what’s with this transfer..shape 1A00DBE3-2D8E-4B68-9EAA-0CC3432B9E6C.jpeg 78A72B5E-D06D-4F27-A76C-9D7CF4AECADB.jpeg 1928AB22-7C26-4894-B9E4-A3821C9F2C77.jpeg ..?

That’s how they should look.
Swept towards the intake

Well yes I agree, but...... I read somewhere here and there, they should be flat so as to cover the piston. But these are not only angled to the rear but curved as well. Nothing like I read of what’s the betterer ways.... lol....and Kawasaki 2x motorcycles, used to do alright... this thing has some grunt on a stihl fs55 weed eater.
Time was not on my side today... but as soon as I get into this wacker again I will get some numbers and better pics......I will be into a fs55 very soon to try a ring replacement.. I will get timing and pics for educational purposes as to why the Kawasaki is better..

Just a garden variety open transfer port there.

Yes... but .... why is stihl flat. Ok a 200t is quad port but still flat where as Kawasaki is smooth and curved also progressively opening...

It’s a learning thing for me what’s better and why....atm...stihl vs Kawasaki Lol...

The 200T is the same....just smaller, and not as pronounced.

When I did finger ports in a Desert Racer I used a couple of holes drilled in the piston to feed the ports. The idea was to 'vent' the piston so it could run a bit cooler.

I don't think I've ever seen a chainsaw use that technique. Does anyone have a picture of someone that used that technique?
