Spent quite a bit of time chipping , scraping and wire-wheeling on this muffler. I'm convinced that for the last few tankfulls that this saw ran , it was running on a motor oil mix 🤔.
I gave it 3 coats of VHT 2000° ceramic black out of a rattle can I had leftover from a previous project. It should last a while .

Leon is the guy's name.
Thanks ,I had forgotten that I just called him "Wolfy " If I recall he was a tool and die maker .Myself just a self trained hack about machining . However I could do the same as a toolmaker it just took me about four times the amount of time to do it . It became really fun coming up with methods dating back 300 years ago like using brown sugar to case harden mild steel .

No, they should be the same, if not then I have been doing it wrong...lol 🤣

Edit: Better to break while in hand than while in the cylinder! I have a McCulloch 10-10 that ate a ring and half of it is still embedded in the top of the cylinder in small bits.

I've broke lots of critical parts in the middle of a build! Haha don't sweat it.
Ever forget to glue a 2" waterline together! Lol I've seen it.

The brown sugar treatment ? It's simple, sugar chemically is C6 H12 O6 .Six parts carbon,12 part hydrogen ,6 parts oxygen .You heat up the steel to cherry red and toss it in a can of sugar which will burn off the H and O and leave the carbon to get absorbed into outer layer of the steel .After it air cools heat it back up to orange which is around 1400 degrees and dunk it in a can full of oil .It's crude but effective .However it only is case hardening ,not completely through the metal .--psst I have more tricks than a barrel full of monkys ---- :) :)

More ,my families history is most men became machinests ,metalurgists .My great great grandfather and my great grandfather ,Fred Smith made the engine bearings for the Spirit of St Louis's engine ,a Wright Whirwind 223 HP radial .The company they owned at the time was "American Non gran brass".These little known or no longer practiced old blacksmith methods were passed down to me by word of mouth .

I just finished restoring a XL-1 and a super mini. They are fun saws
Nice! I've been looking for the right deal on a super mini for over a year, I actually have a variant on one from Jay Hansen, but am looking for other other versions too.
I had to get the only one I’ve seen with a full wrap handle.

That's so cool!
The blue ones are tougher to find
I've noticed that, I'm fortunate to have both a red and a blue one.
