It's from over revving the engine constantly, it can happen to all brands.

I think lots of times in the woods the chain gets a tad dull and they just keep useing it not taking the time to change the chain or sharpen it those pistons dident appear to have any mill marks left on then now I am not saying just because the marks are gone to change it but if we reuse one the clearance needs to be checked we will measure them Dave

I have never seen it before. It is a odd place to fail for a piston. Could it be from heat at the exhaust port. And i wonder if the epa chokd down muffler compunded the problem?

Makes me concerned about reusing the last piston that has not done this. Wonder if it will happen. Oem is suppose to be better but meteor might be a better choice on rebuild.

on my 044 top end, I note the meteor piston is 12-13 grams heavier that the OE piston... my OE has rings stuck in it when weighed and meteor ringless... meteor strong in it's casting's mass... nice! I plan to whittle mine down to at least stock weight... then contour its port passages to transfer and remove BDC mill ridges... lots, and I mean imo... lots of shar edges (mill ridges) in where the piston pushed fuel up out of crankcase and into transfers and pushes thur piston transfer ports... a porter's mecca of delight... ;)

044 meteor piston on triple beam... do like their rings. nicely made! as is piston and pin. perfect near slip fit... :)

Thanks for posting. Man its amazing we dont see more of this. I know alot of over revving goes on.

and, imo... a lot of it gets done to cold engines! hard on parts, until engine fully heat soaked! u can be sure the 2-stroke bike racers don't buzz their air cooled engine C O L D ! ;)

I am waiting on pistons, intakes tubes and carb kits. Been cleaning parts up and getting ready. Only one 046 out of the bunch and i will keep it. Will try to snap some pics of cleaned up partsto tomorrw. I woould say it is at least worth getting one professional stihl saw to draw your won conclusion from. This might be my last but when we are finished it should be a runner

I'd be looking for any pro series saws. Some that come to mind are

Ms260
Ms360
Ms380
Ms440
Ms460
Ms660

Any of these IMO would be good saws to grab even the older or newer versions of these saws are great to get a hold of

Now I need to figure some way to make block plates for intake to vac/pressure test. also need some stihl advice on mm. Do you guys cut this center piece completely out of the inside of the muffler and then open up the oem hole under the screen?
