Little rant. I loaned one of my best friends in the world a 044 permanently. He is not mechanically inclined. There was the caveat that if it needed major work it came back to me. Well he took it to the local dealer and they said it needed a carb and from the sounds of it what I would call a tuneup. Plug, fuel line etc. $400 for parts and labor. Or we have this MS 271 with a 20” bar like that 044 you have for $479 I think is what he said. I was like dude the 028 super I sold you for what I had in it is every bit the saw as that 271 it just has a shorter bar because it’s the right bar for the saw. Anyway he is shipping it back. I feel better now.

Unfortunately it sounds like your friend got snookered by a a bad dealer. Maybe $50 in parts and $350 in labor....that sucks! Glad to hear that you are getting your saw back though.

I’m going to fix it and ship it back to him. Dealer price on a carb is probably $50. This is Stihl we are talking about. But…

Honestly he says it runs. It probably just needs a carb tuning. But he has had it 8-10 years and I might as well go through it.

Is there a cure for this , I have 4 of my 044`s out on permanent loan. I made no deals for them to be held captive , mostly it was a loan until their other one and only got fixed so winters wood could be cut up.

I do not loan out any of my chainsaws and I won't bother keeping a loaner saw either.

No matter whether someone asks for a chainsaw for "just a couple cuts" or actually admits they need to process their upcoming winters firewood I point them to our numerous local supermarkets to go buy one of those 75-100$ generic 50cc chainsaws.
Since they're going to F-up a chainsaw it might just as well be a cheap one & their own.

Don't loan chainsaw to not mechanically inclined person. They would kill themselves or fack up your saw. Coming back with dull chain is the best you can hope.

I had a neighbor methhead kid help himself to my 440 in 2016
I never got it back so I guess you could say that was a permanent loan

I have a Poulan POS green clamshell that wouldn’t die. Primer bulb is bypassed. It sits outside on one of my Industrial lots.
Whenever someone asked for a saw I tell them where that one is.
Rarely can someone get it to start so they give up or bring it by to tell me it’s broken.
So I grab it and it usually starts
I piss rev it a few times and shut it off and hand it back with the instruction to put it back after they are done with it.
It’s always at that lot and the chain seams to hold an edge pretty good as the odd time I need a saw over there it seems to cut good.

There are times I just up and give them away, usually older models like the 028 and 026 saws plus many 025`s I give to young fellas to get them started into making a few bucks from cutting and selling firewood. Several of them actually moved up to running PRO after making a few bucks to buy an upgrade. Many of the saws came to me for free or very little money needing some fixups but go out the door in fine running condition. Trouble is when one or more leave more show up so its been a battle trying to lessen the amount of them sitting around here. I gave 3 away last year and four more got dropped off of which I have 2 now fixed and running good, one more to go when time allows, and one became a parts saw.
