Still Baffled!!!

So, the saw has sat for a few days, so I figured if it had been flooded, some pulls on fast idle would get it going, but nothing.

So I put the choke on, still nothing.

Put some mix down the carb, twice, and not even a pop. Mix started to come out the muffler.

Checked again for spark, and it is there, but changed the plug to another new one any way.

Taped the throttle wide open and pulled a bunch of times, still not even a pop. Got so tough to pull I could not do it w/o decompression.

I'm thinking that even though I see spark, the coil is not strong enough? Have one on order, will try it when I get it, but I really thought I could at least get it to pop today.

This saw has really got me frustrated, and I'm dying to know how it runs!

Any further thoughts are welcome!

Mike, if you used a spark tester and saw blue, check the keyway

Already checked the key, all is OK. I tested the spark by putting an alligator clip wire on the plug & block and pulling the cord in a dark room, I believe the spark was white.

Yea, but I have one on order, and will probably just wait for it. Just want to leave the ones that are running just fine alone!

I hear what your saying. Just thought that you could try it before your committed to the new coil especially if it doesn't end up being the problem.

Just another thought, have you checked the magnets on the flywheel to make sure they both are good and strong. The magnets/flywheel is rarely a problem but sometimes....

Mike, if there is fuel coming out of your muffler, it's flooded. I just dealt with a saw like this. Pull your top cover off and your muffler cover. Loosen the jug bolts up all the way out but keep them started. Lift your jug up as far as the bolts will allow and dump the fuel out of the crankcase. Then take a propane torch, or similar and wave it under the jug. This will get all fuel out of the crankcase, it's the fastest way and it's easy

It is the flywheel that came on the saw, and I did check the key and it has not spun.

Magnets seemed good when I set the gap, used a business card like I always do, and it is producing a spark. But coils have a primary and secondary wiring, and maybe one of them is not working.

I don't have the equipment to vac test it, but thought I would at least get a pop putting some fuel in the carb. The saw has VG compression.

Also, since the tank had pressure when I took the cap off, and since pulling the saw sent the fuel through the carb and muffler, I think I should have at least got a pop, at least when I fist put a new plug in.

Right now, I suspect a weak coil, but also want to replace the carb and check that the impulse line is clear when I do it. I used Vaseline as a lube on the rubber parts, and I'm wondering if that may have clogged it. I think those are the most likely culprits.

I am sure you will sort the issue Mike, I suffer similar brick walls when doing builds. It just takes guys like you & I 5x as long as a professional fulltime saw tech to work it out. Don't be discouraged, you have plenty of saws to use sometimes taking your mind off it helps so doing something else, taking a break from it is all good. I bet its some silly little issue you overlooked but when you work it out and put it in some nice test wood and it runs like a top ya grin will be all the bigger. Take the stang for a ride and dont let a stupid saw bring ya down.

If'n you dont have a spark tester, you can make one quick.
Pull the strap off of a plug that works, and attach a large alligator clip to it, either by solder or by wire.
Ground the clip, put the boot on the plug and pull the saw over. You should see a blue spark jump the gap at least 2 or 3 times for each strong pull of the rope.

This will tell you real quick if the spark is strong enough

I like ^^ that post, good trick. Like many other saw diagnostic specific tools, there's always the other way that works. Now he needs to know how to pressure test with out a tester. Bike pump, compressor down low etc.
